Message from the

Executive Director

Jason Pearson, Executive Director<<First Name>>,

We have been inundated with interest over the last two weeks, thanks to many of you forwarding the first issue of our newsletter and thanks to Heather Clancy's article on GreenBiz.com.  The publicity has brought a number of opportunities for us to launch stronger than we ever imagined.  In order to take advantage of several of those opportunities and the buzz they can bring to the launch, the Steering Committee decided, in consultation with staff, to change the date for the Launch Event webcast to July 23rd at 1pm ET.
Please read below for exciting announcements about our Launch Event media partnership with GreenBiz.com, a new opportunity for government purchasers to be Council leaders and several new partnerships.

New Date & Media Partner for Launch

Joel MakowerThe webcast formally launching the Purchasing Council has a new date -- 1 pm EST, Tuesday, July 23 -- in part to take full advantage of a new media partnership with GreenBiz.com, producers of must-read content for sustainability professionals.

Joel Makower, Chairman and CEO of GreenBiz Group and called the "guru of green business practices" by the Associated Press, will moderate the live webcast. The partnership will boost the event's profile and reach with advertising and email marketing to a GreenBiz audience that includes more than two-thirds of U.S. Fortune 100 companies and hundreds of government agencies.

Participation in the webcast is free but requires registration.

Opportunity for
Government Procurement Leaders

The Council is seeking four municipalities, four states and four federal agencies to represent leading public sector purchasers in the Council's Founders Circle.  These founding memberships represent an opportunity for the selected governments to demonstrate and build on their leadership in the fast-growing sustainable purchasing movement.

If you would like your government to be considered for participation in the Founders Circle, please submit an application.  The Council will review applications on a weekly basis, looking to choose a diverse mix of governments that can contribute to the Council's work in a variety of ways.

In order to enable the full participation of public sector purchasers, there is no financial commitment required of applicants, and scholarships may also be available to cover travel to the Founders Summit, if necessary.

New Partners

The Sustainable Purchasing Council has been conceived and developed as a collaborative effort.  As the Council works to link institutional purchasers with existing best-in-class guidance on sustainable purchasing, we seek to promote credible guidance developed by other initiatives, wherever possible, rather than independently developing guidance of our own.

In order to facilitate this sharing of expertise, the Council is establishing partnerships to support active collaboration with other multi-stakeholder organizations whose activities and objectives are complementary to the Council's work and with whom we have identified specific areas of potential collaboration and mutual benefit.

We are very pleased to announced our first five partnerships:
Stay tuned for news of more partnerships in the coming weeks and months!
