I'm excited to announce that SPLC's 2016 Summit will be held in Washington, DC on May 24-25. See below for details, mark your calendars, and put in your budget request now. You won't want to miss the action-oriented programming and networking with leaders and peers that are hallmarks of SPLC Summits.

Fall is in full swing, and that means a number of things for SPLC: our newly-formed Technical Advisory Groups are beginning work, SPLC staff are attending and presenting at a number of conferences, and a number of SPLC webinars are fast approaching. See below for details.

Save the Date! SPLC's 2016 Summit is May 24-25


We are very pleased to announce that the next SPLC Summit will be held May 24-25, 2016 in the Kellogg Conference Center of Washington DC's Gallaudet University. To get a sense of what to expect, check out the Program Schedule, Presenters, and Multimedia Summary from the 2015 Summit. For budgeting purposes, expect that registration rates will be similar to 2015, with the addition of an early bird discount window.

Join the SPLC Training Materials Focus Group

 

SPLC has developed three ~15-minute prototype training modules and are looking for focus group participants to watch them and provide us with feedback. Interested SPLC Members should contact SPLC's Director of Programs, Christina Macken, to participate.

We will be asking focus group participants to watch each of the three modules, answer a short set of questions about each one, and attend one conference call to provide additional feedback and discuss reactions with other focus group participants.

Survey: Electric Vehicles Usage in Government

 

The Colorado Council for Sustainable Purchasing is conducting a survey to gather information regarding the use of Electric Vehicle charging stations.
Many government entities and public institutions are moving towards installing EV charging stations, either for public or internal use. Your input will help to identify the most common practices regarding EV charging stations. The estimated time to complete the survey is ~10 minutes.

U.S. Government Releases Post-Award Sustainability Verification Guide Does your organization provide purchasers clear guidance on how to verify that vendors actually delivered the sustainable products and services the organization prefers? The United States General Services Administration (GSA) in collaboration with the United States Department of Energy recently released their Verification Guide for Federal Purchasers of Sustainable Products. This guide is intended to help procurement officials verify contractor compliance with sustainability requirements specified in contracts. Both pre-award procurement actions and post-award procurement actions for verifying compliance are outlined. Look for an upcoming SPLC Café Call addressing this topic.

World Bank Overhauls its Procurement Policy, Emphasizing Sustainability The World Bank has dramatically revised the procurement guidelines that direct the spending for its $42 billion in projects. The new framework explicitly advances a number of sustainable procurement priorities: sustainability provisions may now be included in pre-qualification, specification, evaluation, and contract management criteria; value-for-money decision-making is now supported in addition to low-bid; increased anti-corruption measures are being explored, such as third-party monitoring by Transparency International and public reporting of bidder's beneficial ownership information; and more. U.S. EPA Announces Interim Recommendations of Specifications, Standards and Ecolabels
Executive Order 13693 directs the U.S. EPA to provide federal purchasers with recommendations of specifications, standards and ecolabels to use in identifying and procuring environmentally preferable products and services. This interim list specifies the US government's preferences, pending a more exhaustive evaluation of ecolabels and standards that is underway.

UN Formally Adopts Sustainable Development Goals, with Targets on Sustainable Procurement and Fighting Corruption
The United Nations' general assembly has formally adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which includes targets to promote sustainability in the private sector and public procurement. The agenda is made up of 17 Sustainable Development Goals and 169 targets to “wipe out poverty, fight inequality and tackle climate change over the next 15 years."

Report Shows Green Building is a Major Economic Driver
The 2015 Green Building Economic Impact Study, released Sept 16th, 2015 by USGBC and prepared by Booz Allen, finds the green building industry contributes more than $134.3 billion in labor income to working Americans. The study also found that green construction’s growth rate is rapidly outpacing that of conventional construction and will continue to rise. The report includes infographics based on country and U.S. state.
