It's not too late to save $150 by registering for our 2014 Annual Meeting before early bird pricing ends at midnight this Friday, April 11th!  Below you'll see that we have a great program and diverse group of expert presenters that you won't want to miss.

For those who have not yet registered, I am pleased to announce that, in response to your feedback, both days of the meeting are now open to Members and non-Members alike!  For Members, this means that our work in the Day 2 workshops will benefit from additional experience and expertise. For non-Members, this means that attending the meeting will provide you with a unique opportunity to simultaneously contribute to the Council's guidance development conversations and assess - live and in person - the value of becoming a member of the SPLC community and a regular contributor to our work.  We look forward to your participation!

See you in person at the Annual Meeting in a little over a month!

Announcing Annual Meeting Speakers

(with more to come!)

On Monday, the Annual Meeting Planning Committee completed selection of presenters for the Challenges & Solutions workshops. We received a large number of excellent proposals, and the final roster reflects a remarkable diversity of perspectives from purchasers, suppliers, and public interest advocates in government, private sector, academe, and civil society. It is exactly this diversity which will ensure that the work that emerges from this Meeting provides a strong foundation for the Council's guidance, benchmarking, and recognition programs.

Here is a sample of the more than thirty presenters selected to share their leadership expertise and experience during the first day of the Annual Meeting's program. Additional speaker and workshop facilitator announcements are forthcoming.

A Look Inside the Annual Meeting Workshops

In case you haven't heard, this is not your typical conference.  Our workshops will not be "sage on the stage" or "droning trainer" affairs.  They will be focused on getting real work done, right then and there, together. Day 1 workshops focus on how purchasing works as a process. Day 2 workshops focus on what is being purchased.

Challenges and Solutions Workshops (Day 1)
The first 40% of each Day 1 workshop will consist of two or three quick presentations of real-world case studies and/or research related to the workshop's topic.  During the remaining 60% of the time, participants will gather into peer groups, share the real-world challenges they are facing, and then work together to identify solutions, best practices, tools and resources for addressing those challenges.  Given the leadership caliber and diverse perspectives of the participants coming together at this meeting, we are confident that many great connections will be made between challenges and solutions, and we will capture the output of those conversations as important input for the Council's Strategic Planning Guide for Sustainable Purchasing. Workshop topics include:
  • Winning Support for Sustainable Purchasing Programs
  • Spend Analysis: Identifying Social, Economic and Environmental Impacts
  • Supplier Engagement: Surveying, Evaluating, Collaborating and Supporting
  • Requests for Transparency and Disclosure: What Makes Sense?
  • Changing End-user Behavior
  • Sustainable Purchaser Training and Credentialing
  • Measuring Success: Choosing Metrics and Setting Goals
  • Making Sustainability Part of the Bid Award Decision
  • Selecting Labels, Standards & Certifications for Use in Purchasing
  • Influencing Purchasers: Challenges Selling Sustainable Products & Services
  • Buying Innovation: Using Procurement to Stimulate New Solutions

In each Day 2 workshop, participants will be invited to share their perspective on the priority impacts associated with purchasing in that workshop's category and the challenges involved in trying to address those priority impacts.  Then, the participants will work together to identify existing guidance and tools available to purchasers wishing to address the impacts identified in the first brainstorm.  Participants will be able to take the resulting compendium of existing guidance and tools home with them, while that same output will be used to inform the work of Purchasing Category Technical Advisory Groups which will be formed over the next six months to build consensus on what is the best currently available guidance for high priority purchasing categories. Categories to be workshopped on Day 2 include:
  • Food Service
  • Electricity
  • Construction & Facility Renovation
  • Transportation & Fuels
  • Information Technology (IT) Hardware and Services
  • Fiber- and Timber-based Products
  • Chemically-intensive Products
  • Professional Services

CPO Roundtable Luncheon at Annual Meeting

Japen Tal Hollist, AflacThe CPO Roundtable will meet during lunch on the first day of the Annual Meeting, Tuesday May 20th. The CPO Roundtable is an intimate cohort of leading CPOs, representing both the public and private sectors, who have a vision for how CPOs - as a group - can uniquely contribute to the sustainable purchasing movement, and who have a desire to coordinate with other CPOs to realize that vision.  It also serves as a peer community of practice for those executives responsible for their organization's procurement and/or supply chain programs. Japen Tal Hollist from Aflac will chair this meeting of the Roundtable.  All CPOs attending the Annual Meeting are invited to join this lunch.
