This week, we will submit a formal report in response to EPA's Draft Guidelines for Product Environmental Performance Standards and Ecolabels for Voluntary Use in Federal Procurement. And on May 7, we will release the Council's Principles for Leadership in Sustainable Purchasing May 7th at 1pm ET during a webinar hosted by GreenBiz's Joel Makower. A hearty congratulations and thank you to all of our Members who contributed to these deliberative processes, and to Director of Programs, Christina Macken, who coordinated the work. SPLC exists to support exactly this type of constructive collaboration to define and communicate a shared definition for leadership in sustainable purchasing.

For those of you who have not yet registered for the Annual Meeting on May 20-21 here in DC, we invite you to join us for this special event, where we will kick off development of the guidance/rating system, scheduled to begin piloting in December, 2014. Demand for hotel rooms has exceeded our expectations, but we have worked with the hotel to extend the group rate through this Friday, April 25.  So far, 90 organizations are registered for the event, with workshop and presenter specifics now posted on the website.  We have also created a special opportunity for suppliers interested in standing out at the Annual Meeting, to sponsor and exhibit, and we have expanded the scope of the meeting to include presentations and a followup meeting focused on exploring an international agenda for SPLC.

We look forward to seeing you all in less than a month!

Principles Unveiling Set for May 7th!

Register for the webinar today

One of the Council's first projects has been to establish a set of principles that define leadership in sustainable purchasing consistently across all types of organizations, sectors and regions.  Thanks to the diligent work and input of many SPLC members, partners and other stakeholders, we are pleased to announce that the Council's Principles for Leadership in Sustainable Purchasing are complete and scheduled for public release on May 7th at 1pm ET during a webinar hosted by GreenBiz's Joel Makower.

GreenBiz Group logoViewers of the webinar will learn about...
  • the five essential principles for leadership in sustainable purchasing,
  • how to put the principles into action in their organization,
  • how suppliers can support customers’ implementation of these principles,
  • how the principles can be useful to advocates for social and environmental responsibility,
  • and how the principles serve as a foundation for the development of a multi-sector guidance, benchmarking and recognition program for sustainable purchasing leadership.

Public Comment Process Wrapping Up for
EPA Draft Guidelines

US EPA logoIn November, the EPA released Draft Guidelines for Environmental Performance Standards and Ecolabels.  For the past two months, SPLC has provided a forum for members and other stakeholders to discuss the EPA's Draft Guidelines together.  Drawing on those conversations, SPLC will submit a report to EPA on April 25th.  The report will also be posted on the SPLC website.

Organizations that participated in SPLC's forum included the American Chemistry Council, American National Standards Institute, Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturers Association, Center for Resource Solutions, City of Portland (OR), DEKRA, Domtar, EcoLab, GreenCircle Certified, Green Seal, ISEAL, Paradigm Group, Practice Greenhealth, San Francisco Department of the Environment, SCS Global Services, SGIA, Tall Grass Strategies, TightLine Answers.
