Jason Pearson, Executive Director

Even though we won't officially kick-off until the Launch Event webcast on July 23rd at 1pm ET, we are discovering plenty of excitement and interest in the Sustainable Purchasing Leadership Council!
On June 6, we shared the stage at Sustainable Brands 13 in San Diego with Business for Social Responsibility's Center for Sustainable Procurement and Hilton Hotels to talk about how sustainable purchasing can support corporate sustainability strategies. The following week, we were recognized by The Nature Conservancy's Glenn Prickett as he opened The Keystone Center's 20th Annual Leadership Awards in Washington, DC. And just last week, we led a session titled 'Principles of Sustainable Purchasing' at the Corporate EcoForum Annual Meeting in Chicago, with presentations from Dell, EcoLab, FedEx, OfficeDepot, followed by a lively discussion about the goals of the Council and how it could serve both the purchaser and supplier communities. We are both humbled and encouraged by the enthusiasm which this interest demonstrates.
I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank our growing Founders Circle, whose financial support and technical guidance are critical during this prelaunch phase. Founders have provided advice and input on program activities and are participating in a number of pre-launch workstreams, including developing Version 1.0 of the Principles of Sustainable Purchasing, which will be released at the Founders Summit in August as a reference document for members and a guiding framework for the Council.

Finally, some of you may have noticed that our name and logo have changed. Specifically, we added a word to our name; we are now the Sustainable Purchasing Leadership Council (SPLC). We believe that this change will help to differentiate us in the marketplace and appropriately emphasizes the leadership orientation of our work.
We are excited for the official launch in just a few weeks,
and we look forward to working with all of you to build the Council into a powerful platform for collaborating on guidance, measurement and recognition of leadership in sustainable purchasing.

SPLC in the News

As the Council's launch approaches media and readers have been taking notice. Here are just a few of the articles that have been written about us:
A New Era for Green ProcurementBut, perhaps the most surprising news story about us this week came in the form of an award for the article we wrote in Campus Planning & Management Magazine last fall about our higher education pilot project. Trade Association Business Publications International judged our article, titled A New Era for Green Procurement, to be one of the 25 best feature articles in a trade publication last year!

Seven New Founding Members

The Steering Committee's goal of launching the Council with a "balanced and representative group of stakeholders" is moving closer to reality week-by-week as new founding members sign-on. Since our last newsletter, the Council's Founders Circle has added two states, one city, two suppliers, two certifiers, and an NGO focused on social hotspots. The Steering Committee and current Founders Circle members are helping SPLC staff identify additional founding member candidates in the areas of energy, food and agriculture, buildings and construction, IT, healthcare, hospitality and banking. If you believe that your organization would be a good fit, please let us know.

New Strategic Partners

In addition to the Founders Circle, we have also been building relationships with a range of strategic partners. Since our last newsletter, we have finalized the following additional partnerships:
Stay tuned for news of more partnerships in the coming weeks and months!

Government Procurement Leadership Opportunity Filling Up Fast!

In our last newsletter, we announced that the Council is seeking four municipalities, four states and four federal agencies to represent leading public sector purchasers in the Council's Founders Circle.  These twelve no-cost founding memberships represent an opportunity for the selected governments to demonstrate and build on their leadership in the fast-growing sustainable purchasing movement - at quite a savings!

We have already filled six of the twelve spots and have seven applications pending as we await several more applications that we have been told are on the way.  Our goal is to select from the applicant stream a diverse group of government leaders by July 12th, so it isn't too late to receive full consideration.  If your government would like to be considered for the Founders Circle or if you have questions about the opportunity, now is the time to let us know:
