WISERD Conference 2019 Competition Winners

The DTP extends its congratulations to Bangor University PhD student Abeer Alabdan, winner of the poster pitching session at this year’s WISERD Conference, held at Aberystwyth University on 3-4th July.  Abeer receives a prize of £200 of book tokens, sponsored by the Wales DTP.  Congratulations also to Wales DTP student Sophie Baker (Bilingualism, Bangor University), winner of the best poster prize, for her research on ‘Perceptions of belonging in service users with psychosis living in linguistically mismatched communities in North Wales’.   Sophie receives a prize of £200, sponsored by the Learned Society of Wales.

Wales DTP Student Reps

The Wales DTP is seeking enthusiastic students to take up the role of DTP Student Rep for Aberystwyth and Cardiff Universities for a 12 month term.  Student Reps act as a conduit for comments and ideas from fellow ESRC DTP funded students across the academic schools and pathways within their institution, relaying feedback to the DTP about all aspects of the student experience.  Nominees are asked to outline, briefly, why they would make a good student rep and to enlist the support of two fellow ESRC DTP funded students for their nomination.  Send your nomination to the Wales DTP.  For further details about the role visit the Wales DTP website.

Immersive Technologies in Academia and Industry

The Immersive Technologies in Academia and Industry (ITAI) 2019 workshop takes place on 12th September in Cardiff, bringing together people who are interested in Immersive Technology including Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and Mixed Reality, from both academia and industry.  The organisers, one of whom is current Wales DTP Postdoctoral Fellow, Danlu Cen, welcome proposals for talks, posters, and industrial demos, to be submitted by the deadline of 19th August.  A prize of £100 for the best poster will be awarded on the day.  For further details visit the ITAI event page.

UKRI Policy Internships Scheme

The UK Research and Innovation Policy Internships scheme provides ESRC funded PhD students with the opportunity to spend up to three months in a non-academic organisation where they can work as part of a team involved with policy or practice development.  Placements are available at 29 highly influential policy organisations:  Parliamentary Departments, Government Departments and Non-Governmental Bodies, Learned societies and other organisations.  Internships will take place during 2020 and students must be able to start their internship before the end of their funded period of study.  The closing date for applications is 12th August.

Please contact the Wales DTP no later than 5th August to discuss your application.  For further details visit the Wales DTP website.

Overseas Institutional Visits

Full-time ESRC Wales DTP funded PhD students are able to apply for financial support for Overseas Institutional Visits (OIV) during the +3 period of a studentship award.  The funding is intended to provide an opportunity for you to establish research networks, disseminate early research findings, participate in seminars and other academic activities that are directly relevant to your research, or to undertake specialist training that is not available in the UK.  There are two deadlines for the receipt of OIV applications each year.  For the 2019/20 academic year, these are Thursday, 31st October 2019 and Thursday, 30th April 2020.  For further information about the scheme and how to apply visit the Wales DTP website.
