The countdown is on for the New Zealand Festival of Motor Racing which will be held at
Hampton Downs from January 20-22. This year the festival celebrates one of the legends of New Zealand motorsport, the great Kenny Smith, who at the age of 75 is still one of the frontrunners in the Formula 5000 category.

The Formula 5000 Tasman Cup Revival Series will be the feature race of the weekend and it’s a rare opportunity to see some classic cars do what they were designed to do - race flat out on the race track. Check out the full story here

That’s a wrap! Hampton Downs 101 done and a change in the wind for 2017

The Hampton Downs 101 will be the Hampton Downs 500 in 2017 and the event will take place over the weekend of October 28/29. Tony Quinn and the AGT category management have decided to change from a 101 lap race to a 500km race, so essentially adding another 100 km in distance and sending teams back to the drawing board to work on a strategy that will see them have to pit three times and manage fuel differently. The change will certainly give spectators a whole lot more to look forward to.

The Highlands 101 will also change to the Highlands 501, which will be raced over 501 kilometres to create the New Zealand 1001.

“The cars are only getting going after 101 laps,” said Quinn.

A mountain of feedback!

Going by the mammoth amount of great feedback we have had from everyone, the recent Hampton Downs 101 has hit the spot. Of course there is always improvements to be made and we have taken all that feedback on board and will deliver an even better round of the Australian GT Series next year.

Thanks to RJ’s licorice, this year, we provided everyone with a 280g bag of Licorice Allsorts, as a thank you for attending the Hampton Downs 101 and Red Bull chipped in with some cold drinks to help shorten your trip home. In conjunction with this, we asked people to visit our website and provide feedback on what we did well and what we could improve on for next year. We thought we would share some of the comments we received:

“My visit to Hampton Downs was just so awesome and I have not stopped speaking about the experience. I was so impressed with the professional way the event was run with the highlights for me including: the quality of drivers and high performance cars, the ability to get so close to the action including the pits where you could talk to drivers and mechanics, the track was in great shape with lawns mowed and hedges trimmed highlighting the attention to detail and the ample public parking.” Sean Poulton

“What a brilliant experience, loved every moment from start to finish, the changes to the track and facilities are simply outstanding. Cannot wait to bring my seven year old grandson to check out the go carts.” Mike Winchester

“The whole event was perfectly organized. From the time I arrived on the Friday until I left on the Sunday all the staff I encountered, whether it was at the car park or at the party pavilion had exceptional customer service skills. The spectator vantage points that were around the track gave me perfect views of the racing. The ability to get so close to the action in the pits put me in petrol head heaven. Also the free RJs licorice was awesome! Well done. Can't wait until 2017!” John Wallace

“Overall a great day and well done on organising the weather! The facilities were very good including the food and drink. A very nice touch to give out RJ's product and Red Bull to people leaving the event as well. I attended with my family including our 13 year old daughter and she had a great time. A special note of thanks to the Audi team – one of the Audi team invited us into their garage and talked to us about the team, the drivers and cars. He didn't need to do that but it made the day really special for our family. We visited Highlands Park earlier this year and with the improved Hampton Downs facility it's brilliant what Tony Quinn and his team are doing for NZ motorsport.” Paula Fitzgibbon

“The whole experience on the Saturday and Sunday was nothing short of amazing. The facilities, and viewpoints at the track are awesome!! No matter where we were sitting we could still see a good 50% of the track which not many other tracks offer. It also great that spectators are able to walk around the pits and check out all the cars up close and watching the pit crews work. The new layout of the track has made it so much better now from a spectators point of view and I’m sure also for the drivers. Overall it was a 10/10 weekend and we thoroughly enjoyed it.” Tim van Berlo

Hampton Downs celebrates its first female GT Member!

NAME:
Chrissi Harkess
FROM: Auckland

MOTOSPORT BACKGROUND: I was into motorbikes before I was into cars. A few years ago, me and my partner Rob bought a Lamborghini Gallardo. We started doing track days including the Lamborghini Academy with Downforce and we went to Barcelona to do a three-day Lambo experience at the Catalunya Circuit which was epic. Then we got a Huracan and applied for a GT Membership at Hampton Downs. We bought a Lotus Exige 360 Cup car for the track and it’s such a fun car to drive.

WHAT ARE YOUR MOTORSPORT AMBITIONS?: We just did our first Targa Tour in the Lotus. We were thinking of doing the full Targa but the Targa Tour was such fun we reckon we’ll stick with that. We want to do some circuit racing but we’ve got so many hobbies. We’re still into bikes, both road bikes and dirt bikes. We’ve got a couple of off-roaders and now the Targa Tour, so I don’t know where we’re going to find the time for circuit racing.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF MEMBERSHIP?: Rob joined last April and I was his Plus One and we enjoyed it so much I decided to join myself. We’ve met some awesome people and we love what Tony and the team have done at Hampton Downs. It’s just been a really great experience.
