Dragonfly Christmas Greetings 2016

Dear Dragonfly sailors, colleges, and friends,

The year 2016 is waning, and as always I'm happy to send my season greetings, including a quick “flashback” on 2016.

Every year in December, we are extremely busy getting ready for our always biggest boat show “BOOT” Düsseldorf in January. This year, once more we had three boats on display, the Dragonfly 25, Dragonfly 28 and Dragonfly 32. We had a great show, as the Dragonfly 25 on the first day won the prestigious title “European Yacht of the Year”. This indeed put an extra smile on our faces during the show. Quorning Boats won this "European Yacht of the Year" award for the third time, which is quite special for the same boat yard.
Further, at the BOOT Düsseldorf, we proudly presented the new Dragonfly 28 Performance version, which includes new wave piercing floats with 20% more buoyancy and longer, deeper rudder and stronger rigging – since then, 10 Dragonfly 28 Performance have left the yard.
This year was by far our busiest year ever with 52 new boats built during 2016, which is new record for us, and helps us understand, why this year has been so busy – but, it is fantastic. The staff has also grown, and during high season, we were exactly 50 persons employed at the yard.

During the year, 20 boats of the Dragonfly 25 were built, whereas we built 21 of the Dragonfly 28 and 10 of the Dragonfly 32. Only one Dragonfly 35 was built this year.

All these boats have been sold all around the world – just over half of the boats in Europe, and the rest to countries from China and Hobart to South Africa, Seattle and San Francisco etc. We thank all our new clients this year for the trust these new owners have shown us by ordering their new boat so far away. And, to those clients all over Europe, who have chosen us to build them the boat of their dreams.

Dragonfly also took part in a lot of races this season, and, of course our local races here like fx Round Funen is important for us. 30 multihulls took part in this years “Palby Fyn Cup Race “and within the first 10 boats were 7 Dragonflys and myself onboard Dragonfire. Great race.

Later in September, we had this crazy singlehanded race in Denmark, the “SILVERRUDDER” also round the island Funen entering over 400 boats. I was “first ship home” in the Multihull Large Class with my special 28´One-Off Dragonfire, breaking the record with 2 minutes, even though I was drifting for the last ¾ hour to the finish line. Peter Lang won the “Multihull Small Class” in the Dragonfly 25 Sport “Happy Hour”. 23 Multihulls entered.
In Sweden, Gustav Winquist won the Swedish SCTS Championship with his Dragonfly 28 Sport, hull No 4. Gustav won this title for the third time.

Congratulations Gustav!
To create some new visual effects on our homepage, we shot a new and more professional promotion video of the Dragonfly range, involving the Dragonfly 25, Dragonfly 28 and Dragonfly 32 in mid-August. This was very hard work for almost a week, and we are very happy with the result. The wind was poor though, which is why we will try to make a new video with more action next year.

It has also been a very very busy year with a lot boat shows. We and all our hard-working dealers attended the following boat shows during 2016: London, Boot Düsseldorf, Oslo, Amsterdam, Tulln, Ultramarine (Bodensee), Ancora (Neustadt), Portoroz, Seattle, Orust, Southampton, La Rochelle, Friedrichshafen, Annapolis, Hamburg and Berlin. We would like to thank all of you, who took time to visit us at these boat shows around the world.

In this connection, we would like to give a warm welcome to our new dealers Nikolai Bakker (Norway), Gary Helms (San Francisco Bay, US) and Jacek Rogozinski (Poland).

Our “Tri Me” charter project, to get more people to test our Dragonfly 28 Touring, has been a great success once more this year with two boats sailing around the clock from late April till end of September. Thus, with more than 40 weeks of charter this year, a lot of people have tested the Dragonfly 28 Touring and the trimaran concept, which consequently resulted in a lot of new Dragonfly fans that otherwise would have been difficult to reach. Thank you all of you for having the courage to come sailing this with us. Next season is already almost fully booked now - starting up early May 2017 with two new Dragonfly 28 Tourings for the 5’th “Tri Me” season.

A 50 Years Anniversary is special, and we are happy to inform that we will celebrate our 50 Years Anniversary here at the yard, where my dad Børge and my uncle Bent Quorning started Quorning Boats back in 1967. We will honor this in various ways throughout 2017, so please keep updated with coming newsletters. We will start celebrating this at the BOOT Düsseldorf with some wine, gentle live music, and a snack on Saturday 28th January 2017 at our stand from 16.00 to 19.00 o’clock. We look forward to welcome you at stand 15A28.
A very dear friend of the Quorning family and one of the greatest sailors of all times, Paul Elvström, passed away on December 7th in his home by the waterfront just north of Copenhagen by Hellerup. Paul was a great and unique inspiration for all in the sailing world, with his energy and fair play attitude. We, at the yard, had the great pleasure to work closely with Paul, as he purchased his Dragonfly 800 Swing Wing back in 1990. He sailed this boat for 10 years, till he stopped sailing in 1999.

Paul once said:
"My last boat was the Dragonfly 800 which I had for 10 years. The boat gave me a lot of happy memories that I treasure today. Age forced me to end sailing my Dragonfly 800 'BES' - I did it with tears in my eyes."

Paul – we will miss you and your great sense of humour.
It seems the world still likes multihulls, and it’s great to see all these special professional races like CG32 Extreme Sailing Series, M32 World Match racing Tour - great offshore races with these fantastic MOD70, now the new coming solo Round the World record, by Thomas Coville in Sodebo in new mind-blowing record time of approx. 48 days, and not least the lighthouse “America’s Cup” qualifying series.

We all look forward to the final series in Bermuda in April/May. Great sailing and fantastic to follow. This only has a positive reflection on the multihull movement and acceptance of these great boats with more than one hull.
Everybody at Quorning Boats and your Team Dragonfly wish you all the best and some relaxing season holidays with family and friends. We look forward to seeing you in 2017.

From all of us, to all of you,
Your Team Dragonfly

Jens Quorning
