NEW TP ORGANIC STRATEGY DEMANDS INCREASE IN ORGANIC RESEARCH
NEWS. TP Organics – a section under the European Technology Platform – has launched a new strategy for organic research and innovation. TP Organics recommends that at least 10 percent of EU’s Horizon 2020-funds should be spent on research in organic agriculture and food systems. The new strategic agenda describes a prioritization of the research and innovation in the European organic sector until 2020. The document will be used to influence funding priorities of both the EU and the national research programmes.
ORGANIC FARMING COLLABORATION IS GROWING IN EAST AFRICA
FEATURE. The international project ProGrOV has created a platform where researchers and organic movements in East Africa are sharing knowledge and experiences in order to develop the organic farming sector.
ProGroV focuses on improving productivity and growth in existing organic value chains in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania through research that addresses development of agro-ecological methods, governance, management of organic value-chains, and capacity development in participatory and interdisciplinary approaches.
IMPROVED TRACEABILITY CAN ENHANCE TRUST WITHIN THE ORGANIC SECTOR
FEATURE. Management of the information flow among value chain actors through a traceability system is important to enhance consumers’ assurance on safety and quality of food. The food safety consultant Josphat Njenga Gichure has conducted a survey of the organic fresh produce chain in Nairobi. From this survey it is concluded that perception to traceability, documentation, certification, training and monitoring can improve trust between the producers and the traders of the organic sector.
ORGANIC MEAT MUST STAND OUT TO QUALIFY AS A HIGH-VALUE PRODUCT
RESEARCH. Organic meat production has the potential to develop into a more trustworthy high-value production based on local resources and free-range animals. However, organic meat costs significantly more than conventional meat without the consumer necessarily experiencing a great difference in quality. The research project SUMMER has examined whether it could be advantageous for organic meat producers to go for meat products that differs more from conventional.
ORGANIC TROUT OVA/FRY IS AVAILABLE FROM DANISH HATCHERIES
