Eat Well. Avoid Toxins, Be Happy!

It's May, here's my first world problem:  I want to make soups with my brand new Vitamix!   Yet, the weather is finally warm.  Fortunately, there are always smoothies!

I love the long hours of daylight in the spring and being able to spend more time outdoors.  I'm less enamored of the pollen here in North Carolina.  My screened in porch is covered with yellow -- I know, another first world problem.
This month's newsletter looks at
            •          Be Happy Be Kind
            •          Eat Well -- All Vitamix all the TIme
            •          Avoid Toxins - Pepper won't drink out of plastic... why should you?

And, late breaking news for my NC State Employee friends.   I am now a vendor on the WeSave program.  State employees are eligible for a discount on my services.  Check it out and tell your friends!

Avoid Toxins

I think (and blog) a lot about lessons from my poodle.  And, when we are on vacation, my husband and I, on occasion, offer blog posts from our poodle’s perspective.  He will complain about logs on a trail or high grass obstructing his view as we wax poetic about the beautiful vistas that surround us.  Recently, I started to think about avoiding toxins as it relates to pets.
Pepper refuses to drink out of a plastic container unless he is really thirsty and no other choices are available.  It struck me as pretty notable that my dog will put all sorts of unseemly things in his mouth during a walk, but not water from a plastic container.

If my dog is that clear on the fact that plastic containers are not good, I think I am willing to listen to that.  Here are six quick things you can do to reduce the plastics in your life:
  • Don’t heat things up in plastic in the microwave!
  • Store food in glass containers.
  • Use real plates.   For a party we had recently, we bought plates at the thrift shop – cheaper than plastic or paper, reusable, and a much more pleasant dining experience.
  • At the grocery store, whenever possible, don’t put the produce in plastic bags, you can use netted reusable bags..
  • Eat whole, unprocessed foods; they are less likely to come wrapped in plastic. Buy bulk beans, grains and other things.
  •  Purchase a ceramic travel coffee mug and a glass  water bottle.
  • Avoid water in plastic bottles when possible, don't reuse single use bottles, and definitely don’t leave them in your car in extreme hot or cold weather .
Not only is this better for you and your health, but it’s better for the environment.

On the flip side, Pepper will contentedly munch on grass treated with pesticides.   I quickly pull him away from this.  But, it also caused me to stop using treatments on my lawn.  This is partially out of concern for Pepper and his pal Harry, but also, if I don’t want my dog cavorting in it and eating it, maybe I also do not want the residue in my house and my lungs?

If you look at your environment, what can you do to easily reduce the toxic load on your system?   What are the lessons you can learn from the world around you?

Be Happy!

I’m all over the blogosphere!
I was so excited to have a post published in the Elephant Journal.  Here's what I said about Be Giving, Be Present, Be Happy!   And, also, here's the real picture.

And, to clarify, people who are more altruistic have more "gray matter" in a region of the brain known as the temporoparietal junction.  If you want to read more, here's the Huffington Post article about it

Also, especially if you are in a book club or other group, check out my latest post that was published in MindBodyGreen - Nine Life Lessons from 21 Years of Book Club.

Eat Well

I have recently become enamored with Chia seeds which go well with my Vitamix smoothies.   Do you remember the Chia Pets?   Turns out those seeds are good for so much more!  Stay tuned for an Ask Aunt Wendy column about why Chia seeds are so good for you!

Even if you don't have a Vitamix, you can still make delicious smoothies, it is just not quite as much fun!

Here is my basic go to recipe -- mix and match, be creative.
            •          1/4 - 1/2 cup of almond milk
            •          Two handfuls of spinach or kale
            •          4-6 pieces of frozen mango
            •          2-4 ice cubes
            •          1 banana or 1/2 an avocado
            •          1-2 Tablespoons Chia Seeds
If you are using a Vitamix, follow the order above.  Set it to low Variable and 1. Turn it on and quickly turn the power up to 10.  It's ready in a couple of seconds!

It should work just as well in a blender, it just takes a little bit longer.
