Are you enjoying Spring?  What's your favorite part of this time of year.  I love how late it is light out.

There's been some interesting developments recently as big corporations are reacting to consumer choosing to be exposed to fewer contents.  Perhaps, voting with our pocketbooks really works!

Eat Well

A party at a friend's house this month offered a great opportunity to talk about summertime appetizers.

My old standby, learned from my mother, is:
  • A leaf of Basil (good source of Vitamin A and magnesium)
  • A cherry tomato (vitamin C, fiber, and other healthy vitamins)
  • A Mozzarella ball (may help prevent gout)
  • Stack one of each on a skewer, add a drizzle of balsamic vinegar (can lower blood pressure and stabilize cholesterol)
Here's my friend Ilona's remake:
  • A chunk of Watermelon (full of vitamins A, B6 and C, lots of lycopene, antioxidants and amino acids)
  • A square of Feta cheese (lower calorie than other cheeses, but high in sodium)
  • A leaf of mint (contains potent antioxidants and will leave your breath smelling fresh)
  • Put them together on a toothpick or skewer
It's summer - the living is easy! So is the food prep.
Avoid Toxins

It's been interesting to see the last couple of weeks as a number of mega large businesses have shifted their approach regarding chemicals in their products.  The political debate continues to rage and the scientific evidence to pile up, but these companies are responding to consumer demand, which demonstrates how powerful we are when we vote with our pocketbooks.
  • Chipotle announced that it will be GMO free.
  • Panera eliminated 150 chemicals from their food (which raises the question of why there were so many chemicals to begin with, but that is a separate issue)
  • Lowe's decided to stop selling flooring that has Phtalates.
There is still much progress to be made, but I believe this shows that we care about what is in the food we eat and the products in our home.

Be Happy

For a training class I am offering, I created a handout for an appreciation list.   Do you ever find that when you are asked what you are grateful for in your life, you mind starts swirling and even as you are identifying items, you are re-ordering the list, or identifying faults or problems?  "I am grateful for this, but" or "Oops should I put my husband ahead of my dog?"

Part of the lifelong practice of HeartMath is to learn how to experience the feeling of gratitude or appreciation - to make the jump from your head to your heart.   The handout I created lets you develop your appreciation list so you can refer to it whenever you want.

Anytime you want, you can look at the list and pick an item and feel gratitude or appreciation.  Easy, right?!  It's good for your heart and it's good for your brain!
