Your Village Is Waiting....

The Villages are designed to add the essential elements of community and support to the Guided Pathways meta-majors. The six meta-majors, determined through the shared governance process, provide paths for students at De Anza to start their academic journey. The Villages are how we help our students stay on their chosen path. Drawing on De Anza’s success with learning communities, the six Villages will provide focused academic engagement, student services, and social support for students. In their Village, students will find a community of students, classified professionals, administrators, and faculty who share and understand their academic interests and who are committed to supporting their success.

On Student Welcome Day, Friday, September 17, students will be introduced to De Anza through their Villages! The Villages Launch Team—an interdisciplinary group of classified professionals, faculty, and students from across the campus—has designed an engaging and interactive online program to welcome students to each Village. The primary goal of all these activities is to build a sense of community, and this will be the special focus of the activities during the 10-11 AM hour. We encourage all faculty, classified professionals, and administrators to join a Village Zoom session at 10 AM, and to choose the Village that corresponds to their department, division, program, or personal interest. The presence of friendly and eager classified professionals, administrators, and faculty in each Village Zoom session will make students feel welcome and will illustrate the vibrancy of the De Anza community!

After Student Welcome Day, the Villages will continue their focus on providing community and support throughout the year. Each Village will program events each quarter and will also collaborate in larger all-Village campus events, such as the One Book, One Campus project. To help students feel connected to their Village, we will launch dedicated Canvas shells and social media accounts. And, by the end of the academic year, we plan to unveil the six Village Lounges—physical spaces on campus where students can meet and connect with other members of their Village!

The Artistic Expression Village will offer students a warm welcome to De Anza on Student Welcome Day! The Artistic Expression Village is a diverse arts community that includes five departments: Art, Dance and Theatre, Film/Television, Music, and Photography. On Welcome Day, we will offer programming that invites students to learn more about majors, and to explore the wide range of classes that includes art history, animation, ceramics, dance, film/TV production, screenwriting, graphic and interactive design, music, painting, photography, sculpture, spatial art, and more! As we look ahead to the rest of the academic year, our Village is excited to plan contests, festivals, and other artistic events!
The Health and Life Sciences Village asks students a question: "Do you want to examine the inner workings of the living world (humans, animals, plants, and so much more...) and use this knowledge to nurture and heal the world around us?” On Welcome Day, the village will by introducing students to the specific departments, and helping to build connections between students, classified professionals, faculty, and administrators. Throughout the year, the ten academic programs within this village will work together to make sure students succeed and accomplish their goals. As a village, Health and Life Sciences encourages our students to explore, to get involved in fun activities and events, and to find support!

The Physical Sciences and Technology Village is excited to welcome students back to De Anza on Welcome Day. We have a fun set of activities, games and icebreakers in the first hour, and are setting the second hour aside for Department meet-and-greets or other department activities. In the first hour, students will also have an opportunity to hear a little bit about each of the departments and programs our village offers. In Fall, our students will be able to learn more about potential career paths through a Career Panel.
We are excited to welcome students to the Business and Finance Village! Our Welcome Day programming is filled with games, academic and career information related to business, and an opportunity to meet some of the instructors in the departments in our village. We will also be hosting a panel that allows students to share their experience and academic journey at De Anza and beyond. We look forward to offering students our support, guidance and mentorship throughout their time at De Anza.

The Language and Communication Village is very excited to greet students at Welcome Day! We have an exciting agenda that will allow students to build community, meet their peers, and be introduced to faculty within the village. In addition to department introductions, we will also be hosting a student panel consisting of both current and previous students, as well as a Q&A session with faculty from Journalism, Communications, and an English Performance Success counselor! Concluding our day, we have a wonderful opportunity to offer students one-on-one counseling sessions with our amazing EPS counselors. We cannot wait to meet our new students and we look forward to more stellar programming in our village throughout the year!

The Social Sciences and Humanities Village includes a wide variety of majors. This village is a place for students who want to observe people and processes, engage minds, and transform lives…as well as participate in great internships and share knowledge with fantastic faculty. We are excited to welcome new students to De Anza and prepare them for success in their studies and later careers—and, mostly importantly, as global citizens. Welcome day in the SSH Village will invite students to get connected to campus, to each other, faculty, staff, and the community at large.

Faculty and staff should join a Village Zoom from 10-11 AM on Friday, September 17th.
