Updates to the NVS (NANOOS Visualization System)
Forecasts for Pycnocline and Thermocline Depths
Thanks to feedback received from the fishing community, the NVS Data Explorer and Tuna Fisher apps now include forecasts for pycnocline and thermocline depths for the NANOOS region produced from the OSU ROMS model, indicating the areas and depths at which fish are more likely to be found. More information and definitions for these variables can be found here
Global View of NOAA Models
The NOAA HYbrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM) and WaveWatch III models are now displayed on globally on NVS, making it easier to track conditions on a larger geographic scale.
The HYCOM model provides forecasts for sea surface water temperature, salinity, and currents, while WaveWatch III forecasts dominant wave period, wave height, and wind speed.

Seafloor Data Available from Ocean Observatories Initiative
Data streams from the Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI) Coastal Endurance Array's Benthic Environmental Packages are now available on NVS for offshore Oregon (580 m) and the Oregon shelf (80 m). Measurements displayed on NVS from these instrument packages include water temperature, salinity, and pressure.
Reaching out to the Maritime Community

NANOOS staff shared a booth with NOAA at the annual Pacific Marine Expo from 16-18 November in Seattle, Washington. This event is the largest commercial fishing and marine tradeshow on the West Coast, with attendance from fishermen, shipyard workers, captains, charter boat operators, port officials, and other groups affiliated with the maritime industry. Participants appreciated the live demos of the various maritime NVS Apps with much enthusiasm.

NANOOS Outreach Specialist Rachel Wold joined the Puget Sound Cruising Club’s meeting on November 17 as a guest speaker. Rachel presented the NVS Boaters App, followed by a live demonstration guided by questions from the audience, which was made up of over 40 club members.
Presentation slides can be found here.

If you know of a group who would like a Boaters App presentation, please contact Rachel Wold at rwold@uw.edu.
