We hope you have been enjoying this winter season. We know that winter often brings cold and flu and this year has been especially rough.  In today's world, it's easy to visit the local pharmacy and pick up a favorite over the counter medication to soothe what ails us. However, the unfortunate price we pay for doing so is that we are not sure what we are putting into our bodies, such as carboxymethylcellulose sodium, povidone, or sorbital solution (all found in a popular brand of cough syrup). As the year kicks off, we would like to approach our health more holistically and have a better sense of what we put into our bodies.

We are working towards a better balance in our lives by eating foods which strengthen our immune systems, by spending time with friends and family, and by practicing yoga, all of which nurture our body, mind, and spirit.

Our goal over this year is to share our journey with you as we launch a new business, explore and eat delicious, natural foods, and strive for balance in our lives.  To do this, we will offer a variety of exciting spice and herb demonstrations, educational discussions, as well as continually provide new products that will take you on a journey around the world without having to leave the District. We hope you enjoy the ride.

See you soon!
Ivan and Monica

Spice Chic's Spicy Vegan Urfa Eggplant Dip

Spicy Vegan Urfa Eggplant Dip? Chocolate Urfa Brownies? Check out one of our latest blog posts describing the aroma of Urfa, one of our latest and greatest peppers! "Urfa pepper comes from Turkey. It is processed by drying in the sun and then letting the pepper "sweat" throughout the night to seal in the moisture. What you end up with is a delightfully soft coarsely ground pepper that feels oily to the touch. (It's kind of amazing to roll between your fingers.)" Check out Spice Chic's recipe for Spicy Vegan Urfa Eggplant Dip And, while you're at it, check out her amazing Lamb Meatball Recipe using our Baharat spice. She really brings to life the flavors and aromas of our spices and provides easy to follow recipes that can really add a twist to your cooking adventures.

New Product Alert: Javanese Long Pepper

Throughout history, Javanese Long Peppers were used in the Far East interchangeably with the more common black peppercorns. Javanese Long Peppers became less widely used in the West as Chiles became more popular mainly because they were easier to produce.

Javanese Long Peppers, from Java, Indonesia, are a little hotter than black pepper and more complex in flavor. You will not find many recipes calling specifically for them, however, this is one of those forgotten treasures that begs for experimentation.  Try the long peppers in a marinade or stew. Just throw a few in and remove after cooking.  Some folks even put them in their spice grinders or mills and sprinkle on their favorite foods. Isn't fun to try something new?

Wonderful World of Salts

What a great response to our salt tasting a few weeks ago. Thanks to our growing community of spice lovers for braving the cold to visit us and try over 20 different salts from our extensive salt collection. A big thank you to DC Chef Laura Knight of A Knight's Feast for creating a wonderful sampling of foods for us to try including chicken piccatta, lamb meatballs, and caramel chocolate. It was great to taste  and learn about unique salts, including Pink Himalayan, Black Lava, and Bay of Fundy, and also  engage with our community. While there were no clear winners during the evening, the unique, volcanic, Red Hawaiian Alaea, the Maine Cherry Wood Smoked, and Vanilla Bean Sea Salts were among some of the favorites.
