Welcome

Happy New Year! Welcome to Bazaar Spices' first newsletter of 2013! We hope you had an enjoyable holiday and we wish you all the best in 2013! This is Ivan and Monica, the owners of Bazaar Spices. Thank you for visiting our shop at Union Market and signing up for our newsletter. We have enjoyed building our community of friends and family at Union Market and appreciate your patronage.

Over the last two months we have nurtured our creation, Bazaar Spices, into a specialty spice shop offering over 200 different varieties of spices, herbs, botanicals, rice, flour and lentils from all over the world. During your visits and through our conversations, we listened to you. Because of your requests and what we have learned from you, we have successfully expanded upon our offerings to include such items as Za'atar, Curry Leaves, Grains of Paradise, African Bird Pepper, and an assortment of lentils and salts. We learn a great deal from you and our goal is to provide you with some of the best quality offerings for your culinary and holistic needs in Washington, DC.

Through Bazaar Spices, we seek to create a sense of interconnectedness in our DC community and share our appreciation for authentic regional foods—in particular, the spices and herbs that are used in so many traditional dishes and healing remedies. We hope that you can engage with us through our educational discussions, connect with us via social media, tell your friends and family about us, and come back to visit us at our shop. We have developed some great relationships with our customers, have been showered with great stories and recipes that you have shared with us, and we look forward to continuing to develop our relationship with you and others in 2013.

What's The Fuss About Gluten?

On Wednesday, January 9 at 6:30pm, Bazaar Spices will host its first educational discussion of the season! Personal Trainer Stephen Carter of Evolving Fitness will speak on gluten, the effect of gluten on the body, and how to adjust your diet to accommodate gluten intolerance. Stephen has been a personal trainer for more than 10 years, building health, wellness and fitness programs for his clients around an understanding of the potential of the human body and the progressive methods best suited for transforming it.  Stephen's unique understanding of gluten intolerance and celiac disease has been a result of being diagnosed at the age of 19. His research into the condition has delved into the physiology and gastrointestinal changes that occur as a result of gluten intolerance, how people develop gluten intolerance and ways to address it. Use Turmeric Much?

Turmeric is such an amazing spice. Turmeric is used frequently in curry powders and even in mustard for its  bright yellow color. However, to many it is a one-stop pharmacy as it is known to have anti-inflammatory properties that are useful in disinfecting cuts and burns, lowering blood pressure,  and reducing the painful effects of rheumatoid arthritis. We sometimes make turmeric tea or just mix a teaspoon or so of turmeric with cold water, or make a turmeric mask to refresh the skin. Here's to good health and glowing skin in 2013!

Need Vitamin C?

The next time you stop by to see us, check out our Rose Hips. They are high in Vitamin C, are great for making jams, jellies, pickles, and can be used on salads or in sandwiches or in teas! Swing on by and check out our selection of cold and flu fighters to boost your immune system this winter.
