Just Around the Corner - November
On November 4, we will observe All Saints Sunday and remember those friends and loved ones of the church that have passed away in the last year.
There have been a number of deaths that have affected members of our church in the last year. We have lost mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, life-long friends and well known members of the Memphis community. Some of the deaths were expected, the unavoidable end following years of sickness. The death of others were very unexpected, adding a sense of shock and disbelief to the accompanying grief.
We will all carry the names of those saints that personally touched our lives - those who named God within us, evoked God from us, and who gave God to us. Of all the grief and sadness that death has caused our congregation in the last year, it has been the death of William ‘Billy’ Bickers and Ruth Ingram that have touched our lives as a whole.
From The Companion to the Book of Common Worship:
“All Saint’s Day is a time to rejoice in all who through the ages have faithfully served the Lord. The day reminds us that we are part of one continuing, living communion of saints. It is a time to claim our kinship with the “glorious company of apostles, prophets, and martyrs.” It is a time to express our gratitude for all who in ages of darkness kept the faith, for those who have taken the gospel to the ends of the earth, for prophetic voices who have called the church to be faithful in life and service, for all who have witnessed to God’s justice and peace in every nation. Reminded that God was with the faithful of the past, we are reassured that God is with us today, moving us and all creation towards God’s end in time.”
Billy and Ruth are indeed saints of our community of faith. They have taught each of us with their words and their actions. They have lived their faith out in service, both internationally and here at home. They have exemplified the love of Christ for us, and their absence remains to be felt in our church and in our hearts.
We give thanks for Billy and Ruth and for all the saints we continue to name in our hearts, this day and always.
