Just Around the Corner - August

Pastor’s Pen

Growing up at Southminster Presbyterian Church in Birmingham, we would hold a bi-annual church work day, dubbed ‘SOS Day’. The moniker always felt like a misnomer to me, because the church was never in distress, unless you count the need to pressure wash the sidewalk as emergency disrepair. ‘SOS’ always pops into my mind anytime planning starts for Shady Grove’s own church work days, but I’ve never felt the need to push the name.

‘SOS’ popped back in my mind this past week, but for a completely different reason. Between August and September, there will be a number of opportunities for our congregation to ‘support our students’; our own ‘SOS’.

Sunday, August 5 (this Sunday!) will be a youth led service at Shady Grove! The youth group, led by Chris Williams, has been hard at work planning worship and reflections that will give the congregation a taste of the Montreat Youth Conference experience. We will also have the ‘Blessing of the Backpacks’ for all students as the new school year begins, so parents please bring along your child’s pack!

On Monday, August 6 - the first day of school for SCS - everyone is invited to come to Shady Grove Elementary School at 7:30a to give the students a warm and exciting welcome. This kind of gathering occurred last year at multiple schools in the district as a community response to a significant decline in the Hispanic student registration, which was attributed to a contagious fear in the wake of numerous ICE raids within Memphis. I’m not sure of the registration numbers this year, but since the atmosphere remains tense, this is a needed moment of welcome and warmth. We will make signs to greet the students in the Fellowship Hall after church this Sunday.

Finally, it appears we have found a wonderful project for the upcoming MIFA 50th Anniversary Community Days! In partnership with Masjid Al-Salam and MIFA, we are working on a service day at Shady Grove Elementary. After some other initial thoughts fell through, I reached out to Principal Kiersten Schnacke at the elementary school to see if we could be of service there. It shouldn’t have surprised me that the answer was a resounding ‘Yes!’ Principal Schnacke will arrange for a number of projects, both indoor and outdoor, that will help improve the lives of the teachers and the learning environment for the students.

I hope you are excited and will join me over the coming days and weeks to SOS - ‘Support our Students!’

Blessings,
Rev. Will
