Supergen Bioenergy Hub at formal launch of rice straw biogas facility in the Philippines

Patricia Thornley and Mirjam Roeder travelled to the Philippines last week for the formal launch of an anaerobic digestion pilot facility that converts rice straw to biogas. The Rice Straw to Biogas (R2B) project aims to transform rice straw from what is currently waste into a resource of clean fuel and rural prosperity. Read our press release and see photos on Twitter.

Call for abstracts for our biofuels conference – deadline 10 July

The deadline is Wednesday 10 July to submit an abstract for our ‘Building a Sustainable European Biofuel Industry’ conference in Gothenburg in November. You find out more and download the abstract submission form from the Supergen Bioenergy website.

We will be offering travel bursaries to the SHARE network for early career researchers. Sign up to the SHARE mailing list to receive more information on travel bursaries in the near future.

Flexible funding call closes 10 July

Our flexible funding call for research proposals to investigate the potential for co-production of bioenergy and bio-products from UK resources to deliver sustainable environmental benefits closes on 10 July.

Calling all engineers: Please complete the Engineering Census

As part of the centenary of the Women’s Engineering Society (WES), the Royal Academy of Engineering is partnering with them to conduct a census survey of engineers looking at engineering careers, career progression and any possible blockages to career progression. The aim is to get over 10,000 engineers completing the survey, the results of which will be published at the end of the year.

Open public survey: Horizon Europe co-design 2021-2024

The European Commission opened a public consultation on the strategic plan for Horizon Europe, which will guide the work programmes and future calls for proposals of Horizon Europe between 2021 and 2024.

IEA Bioenergy reports: Measuring, governing, and gaining support for sustainable bioenergy supply chains

These reports summarise the efforts of the IEA Bioenergy, part of the International Energy Agency (IEA), inter-task project designed to address the challenges associated with measuring and governing, as well as communicating, how bioenergy systems contribute to sustainable development.

IEA Bioenergy report: Technical, economic and environmental assessment of biorefinery concepts – developing a practical approach for characterisation

Currently, there are two main challenges related to assessing the environmental and economic components of biorefining processes: data availability and stakeholder participation. In this report, IEA Bioenergy provides an overview on biorefinery assessments methods and results.

Join the EPSRC Early Career Forum in Engineering

EPSRC is seeking applications from early career industrialists, academics and from individuals working in the third sector and government organisations to join their early career forum in the engineering theme. Deadline: 1 August

Newton Fund opportunities with partners in Brazil, Colombia, Egypt, Indonesia, Mexico, Philippines, Thailand, Turkey, China, Jordan, Philippines, South Africa and Vietnam

The Newton Fund provides a range of activities under the ‘people, research and translation’ strands. Deadline: various dates in August

NERC funding call: Landscape decisions mathematical and statistical challenges 

Projects are expected to explore and develop how we model multi-functional coupled human-environment landscape systems with improved model robustness and explicit quantitative treatment of uncertainties. Deadline: 10 September (notification of intent by 26 July)

Energy Catalyst Round 7: Smart, affordable global energy systems – apply for funding

Round 7 of the Energy Catalyst will encourage the development of products and services that help poorer households and enterprises in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia to access secure, low-cost and low-carbon energy. Deadline: 18 September

EPSRC decarbonising heating and cooling funding call

The research proposed must clearly address decarbonisation of heating, decarbonising cooling or decarbonising both heating and cooling. Deadline: 19 September

1st FERIA Conference: The European conference on fuel and energy research and its applications

This conference takes place from 14 to 16 September 2020, at the University of Nottingham, Jubilee Campus, Nottingham, UK.

ENRICH in Brazil matchmaking tour to Brazil

ENRICH in Brazil is the Brazilian centre of the European Network of Research and Innovation Centres and Hubs, the contact point for European and Brazilian science, technology, and innovation actors aiming at bilateral cooperation. ENRICH in Brazil is organising a matchmaking and innovation tour to Brazil from 23 to 27 September 2019, a unique networking opportunity for European organisations operating in the area of bioeconomy, renewable energies and technologies applied to these sectors.
