Dear Parents,

A season for giving...

As we bring this year to close, TOPP KIDS is gearing up for an exciting January! with the addition of value programs coming into our centres like Engineering for Kids and Monkeynastix, we are excited to also have both literacy and art programs coming in to visit. the goal for these programs are to open the children's minds to new activities and new opportunities as well as learn about amazing careers and JUST HAVE FUN!

December is always busy and we are extremely excited to host our Annual Holiday Parties at every program. Events like these bring children and families together with their schools and the programs and are a great way to build community and end the year!

Since 2015 at our holiday parties we have started a tradition of helping families that need a hand over the Christmas season with our Adopt A Family initiative. this inititive gives our community an opportunity to help one another. This year we are focusing on 3 families. See the Adopt A Family post below.

Also, don't forget to sign up for our Parent Event- Adolescent Development and Making Healthy Choices with world renowned Dr. Gail Gorge on January 19th, 2018. You can sign up through the post below.

From our family to yours, we would like to wish you all an amazing holiday season and see you all in the new year!

The TOPP KIDS Adopt A Family Project was created 2 years ago in 2015 to help out families in TOPP KIDS programs that were having trouble and needed a hand over the holiday season. By word of mouth only, our staff and the families in our programs pulled together in less than 10 days that year to make that families Christmas one to remember, going above and beyond anything we could have ever imagined!! Last year in 2016, with the amazing support of everyone yet again, we were able to help two families in need. This year we are hoping to support 3! Thank you everyone for your support of the greater TOPP KIDS Family, it is because of all of you these families cold enjoy an amazing holiday season too!

All items can be dropped at any TOPP KIDS program by
                     Wednesday December 20th 2017.

Over the last month we have had the amazing team from Engineering for Kids join us, helping add to our S.T.E.A.M. programming with the children. Every program has already had a chance to work with robotics and coding as well as various other projects. We are very excited to have them join us throughout this year and cant wait for them to visit again in the new year!

Engineering For Kids puts the excitement in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education by offering hands-on learning for children ages 4 to 14 through FUN and challenging activities.

We are passionate about inspiring children to build on their natural curiosity through our classes, camps, workshops, and parties. From designing and constructing rockets, hot air balloons, and roller coasters to robotics, video game designing and creating FUN objects using LEGO® bricks.

The variety of programming is extraordinary, including Aerospace, Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Environmental, Industrial, Marine and Mechanical engineering as well as LEGO® Robotics and Electronic Game Design.

Check out what each of our programs have been up to!

Creating Crayon art on Canvas!!!
Coventry Hills Elementary

In November we had a parent speaker guest (Melinda) come in to do a career presentation about nursing. Her presentation was about 1 hour long! She created a slide show with pictures of the operation rooms and many more neat things. Children were very engaged and enthused about what kind of help and procedures there were in a hospital. They had many questions and comments of when they had visited the hospital. We had a blast outside and children were dressed up warm and appropriately for the day where they made a snow fort. They could put there bodies inside and communicate with each other by going through with their heads first. We also had many cooking clubs which the children really enjoyed doing and put a lot of hard work into it. One of them was for the Mammal week and cooking club was Bear Paws. For the “All About Sound” theme children were very interested how a hearing aid works, we also played a lot games that involved guessing what noises made what, how far you can hear a clap sound with a head phone on and did a stem project making telephone!

Join us for our Christmas Party Thursday December 14th 4:30 - 5:30pm

Thank you to Melinda for the wonderful Nursing presentation! The kids loved it!

Copperfield Elementary

November was an exciting month at Copperfield!  We had our first ever Parents vs. Kids Dodgeball night, which was a huge success!  It was great to see so many parents out to join us in an activity we all enjoy and play regularly in our centre.  Not only did the parents have a blast, but so did the children!  They were talking about it for days afterwards.  We will definitely be making this a monthly event starting in January, switching up the sports we play each month.  We also had a program called Engineering for Kids come in to do marble runs and robotics.  The kids were completely obsessed with building their robots and then battling them!  For the next month, the children will be working hard to practice their carols in groups to get ready for our Christmas party and Cultural potluck. We are really excited for everyone to join us and see what kinds of cultural or traditional foods our families have at Christmas December 15th 4:30pm - 6pm

Evergreen Elementary

It’s been a wonderful month at Evergreen!  We would like to thank all families for coming to our Day in the life of a Topp Kid! Our day was filled with making and exploding mini volcanos, creating family passports, and beating the parents in a soccer game! We really enjoyed having you all come in to be part of the excitement!
This month we had the privilege of having engineering for kids come in! When they were here we got to make, decorate, and battle sumo-wrestling robots and create a marble run out of many different materials. We loved experiencing different ways to use our brains!
This Holiday season, in the spirit of giving, Topp Kids Evergreen is fundraising for the Calgary Women’s Center. We will be collecting donations of toys, clothing and women s necessities. We will be collecting donations up to Friday December 15th.

Maple Ridge Elementary

November has been such an eventful month, we started off with lots of birthdays and ended it with our fun family movie night. The movie night allowed us to get so much great feedback and some fun ideas for us to implement throughout the school year to come. We were also able to raise money for our kids choice fund and this fund allows the children to count the money and then vote as a group to purchase or do an activity of their choice. We also had a very fun PD day in November with Engineering for Kids coming in to create robots and marble obstacle courses with the kids and we also had some of our Junior Leaders create a fun obstacle course in the schools hallway for everyone to enjoy.
With Christmas being the next holiday on the horizon, we have lots planned for the kids and the parents. The Kindergarten room has participated in Operation Christmas Child this year with such great family participation. We look forward to seeing all that can attend December 14th 4:30 - 7pm. It should also be noted that TOPP Kids is open on December 22nd for the PD day, but closed from December 23rd to January 7th for Christmas and New Years.
