"A good upbringing means not that you won't spill sauce on the tablecloth,
but that you won't notice it when someone else does."
—Anton Chekhov

The Atlantic had a wonderful article recently about finding a local "third place" which they describe as "physical spaces for serendipitous, productivity-free conversation." Warson Woods has a plethora of such places in our built environment with the many public spaces in our parks, the local restaurants and business we can walk to on Manchester Road, and, of course, through the Warson Woods Swim Club each summer. Our rituals and traditions are what make this neighborhood unique and wonderful. I think you'll enjoy this article. It's Tornado Season, Be Prepared

Because "tornado season" in Missouri stretches from April through June, here are some safety tips to help you be prepared. According to the MY Extension website, during the storm you should:

  • In a home or building, move to a pre-designated shelter, such as a basement.
  • If an underground shelter is not available, move to an interior room or hallway on the lowest floor, and get under a sturdy piece of furniture.
  • Stay away from windows.
  • Get out of automobiles.
  • Do not use a highway overpass as shelter.
  • Do not try to outrun a tornado in your car; instead, leave it immediately.
  • If caught outside or in a vehicle, lie flat in a nearby ditch or depression.
  • Manufactured (mobile) homes, even if tied down, offer little protection from tornadoes and should be abandoned.
  • Outdoor warning sirens are for individuals outdoors. They are a warning to go to an inside shelter and listen to any Emergency Alert System (EAS) messages for details.

Business Spotlight - Vangels Restaurant and Bar
Q&A with Louie Vangel, Owner Vangels Restaurant and Bar
What is your history in the restaurant business?
My history in the business is pretty much in my DNA. I remember being a little kid, my parents would bring me to work at Charlie Gitto’s Downtown. I’d be 6/7 years old going up to tables asking them how everything was, thinking I was someone important.

What inspired you to open a restaurant?
Once I got to college, I truly took an interest actually working. I would bus and help expedite and run food. Then started bartending at 20 (15 years ago) and I never looked back. The restaurant business is very unique, and you almost get addicted to it. The people, the food, the atmosphere. It’s building relationships with strangers that become friends and friends that become family. All based on this love that we all have about food and drink. And sharing those experiences with others is why I do it.

When are you going to open?
We’re shooting for mid-May but with the way the world is sone things are moving slower than others - but we’re creeping towards the finish line.

What's the vibe of the restaurant?
Our vibe is upscale casual. We want to be the neighborhood place you want to come to a few times a week. Bring your family, friends, coworkers and even your kids. You can have a nice dinner or grab a beer at the bar and just watch the game. There will be a little bit for everyone.
Are you bringing any items of inspiration from Charlie Gittos?
There will be some classics brought back. Just want to continue a great tradition that my grandparents started downtown out to Warson Woods.
What is your favorite menu item?
By far my favorite item is the chicken parm - I’ve sold that dish thousands of times downtown.
One time I was selling beer outside for a ballgame and eight guys walked by when I overheard that they were going to Friday's. I told them they can get that in a freezer at the grocery store and to come in and try our chicken parm. They said they would but if they didn’t like it, I’d have to pick up their check - I agreed. Needless to say, I didn’t buy anyone dinner that night and that dish had still never let me down! Why did you choose Warson Woods?
I have a good number of friends that live out this way and they would always ask me to open a place out here. After seeing about 8 restaurants I got a call about the space in Warson Woods. When I walked in, I immediately felt this was the spot.

"The Creek Bridge"
The genesis of the charming walkway and creek bridge connecting Beaucaire Drive to Flanders Drive was the addition Warson Woods Elementary (now Rohan Woods School) in 1958. The Subdivisions referenced in the article were Coral Ridge, which consists of homes on Mark Drive, Minmar, and Rue Renee while Biscayne Heights refers to most all the rest of the western side of Warson Woods.
