“An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity.”

Editor's Note: Charting a Path for Warson Woods in 2022

As the first month of the new year rolls by, I want to challenge you, and us, to think of one thing we can each do to strengthen our Warson Woods community this year. What if we were known for being a community in the area that does a wonderful job of welcoming our newest residents to the area and truly integrates them into the community/our social circles? What if we were known for having groups of kids pick up any trash they see as they bike or walk through the neighborhood? What if we were known for the strength of our public spaces and using them at every turn and at every chance to gather with neighbors and say hello?

You might be thinking, "Yes! We do this and so much more." and that is true in my experience, but one thing I know for sure is that these things only continue to happen if we recommit in each new year and in each moment we can, to continue these Warson Woods traditions. It is within our power to build our community for the next generation and we welcome all of our residents to share their ideas with us on ways we can organize more community events and traditions to strengthen the beauty of this neighborhood we hold so dear. As a child, I heard this daily reflection prompt once and have never forgotten it: "Did your actions today bring honor to your family, community, country, and faith?" Now those are words to live by in 2022. Let us recommit ourselves to the practice of living in community with one another in meaningful and productive ways. We welcome your ideas via email to

Spotlight - Officer Matt Ruhl
When did you become a police officer? I graduated from the police academy in 2007. My uncle was a patrolman for the K9 unit in the city and my cousin was a police officer in Sunset Hills. I really enjoyed my criminology classes at UMSL so I decided to make that my career!

What do you like most about being a police officer? Engaging with the community. I'm very community oriented and love talking to people. I feel that it's crucial to get to know the community you serve so everyone feels more comfortable coming to us if they need help. I've stopped by every business in Warson Woods to introduce myself, and still stop by regularly just to say hi.

What drew you to Warson Woods? I learned about the position from my friend Gene (Tisus). During the interview process I did some ride alongs and I loved the people. It has a real Mayberry feel. We stopped and talked to several neighbors and that made me really want to work in this neighborhood.

What do you like to do in your free time? I love to golf, hang out with my friends and work out. I also have two children - an 11-year-old daughter and 18-year-old son.

What is your favorite police movie? Police Squad!
From The Archives
Wonderful article from Jim Kroeger, Warson Woods Resident from 1949-1965 about St. Louis as Tornado Alley. Thanks, Jim, for sending us these items for the archives from your current home in Ohio! If you find any old Warson Woods artifacts, please email them to us at for a future issue.
Pet Tags
Warson Woods requests that you register your dogs/pets annually with the city. The form is available here and can be returned with the $2 fee to City Hall.

This is a great way to help our community return your dog to you if they are found at any point.
