MechE Fall 2015 Newsletter

Message from the Chair

Dear ME Friends, Alumni, and Students:

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the first digital version of
MechE Force, and to share with you some of our recent activities and accomplishments.

Conquering Concussion

With the development of a “digital head,” Professor K.T. Ramesh and Assistant Research Professor Nitin Daphalapurkar are perfecting a computer model of the brain that could have profound implications both on the playing field and on the battlefield.

Egg Chamber Biomechanics

Associate Professor Sean Sun and a team of researchers reveal molecular mechanisms governing tissue shape regulation within a developing fly egg chamber.

Virtual Wind Farm

Postdoc Richard Stevens, along with Professors Charles Meneveau and Dennice Gayme, help develop a new way to study wake effects and challenge the conventional belief that turbines arranged in a checkerboard pattern produce the highest power output.

Target Practice

Students taking Freshmen Experiences in Mechanical Engineering use two mousetraps, six rubber bands, and $15 worth of materials to build a device that can safely transport an uncooked egg from an elevated platform to a target six feet below.
