GRATITUDES
Our oldest member, Irene Howarth turned 99 in October! One of the best things about church is the community that forms around it. Irene is a devoted member of our Congregation despite being unable to attend services, and we keep her in our prayers. It would be meaningful for her to receive as many cards as we can send! Please join us in that celebration!
Her address is: 153 Coho Lane, Suffield, CT 06078
When I heard about Irene’s birthday, I thought about all the things that she has seen in her lifetime.
Here are a few highlights from the past 99 years:
- Women got the right to vote in 1920, just a few years before Irene was born.
- In October 1929, the New York Stock Market crashed, sending the United States into an unprecedented and desperate economic depression that scarred a generation of Americans.
- Television was invented by Philo Farnsworth in the 1920s, the first broadcasts began in 1939 and within years television was everywhere.
- Polio Vaccine Dr. Jonas Salk's great invention -- a vaccine that prevented the scourge of polio was in 1955.
- JFK was assassinated On Nov. 22, 1963, and the nation mourned.
- She got to see Neil Armstrong on the moon.
- The computer was invented. Only a generation ago, people used slide rules, adding machines and typewriters. The first computers led to bigger, faster and cheaper devices, and then the Internet.
- Cellular phones the size of a shoe. Cellular phones the size of a wallet.
- Irene lived through too many wars, WWII, the Korean War, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan.
The most important thing to know about Irene, however, is she raised a family in faith, she walks with Jesus as her companion, and she knows that “God is Good; all the time. All the time; God is good."
With your help we will create a blanket of blessings to celebrate her 99th!
Love, Denise

The children will be practicing during Sunday School the next few Sundays so please try to have them in church for rehearsals. They will also be given their costumes.
