Update from the Forum Board of Directors

Since the last IVCO in Paris, the Forum Board of Directors has followed up a number of the activities proposed at the 2013 Annual General Meeting and worked to gain support for “The Paris Accord”. The “Forum Post-2015 Working Group” has been established, and we have strengthened our participation in a cross-agency Task Force which prepared actions for International Volunteer Day on 5th December 2013. In the coming weeks and months, we will continue to play an active role in promoting volunteering for development in the post-2015 agenda.

The planning and preparation of IVCO 2014 is also well under way with IVCO 2014 confirmed to take place in Lima Peru (read more about IVCO 2014 below).

Forum’s members are the backbone of the organisation, and it is encouraging to see increased interest in membership and collaboration from new stakeholders. The Board looks forward to the involvement of existing and new members in the year to come, and also encourages you all to continue contributing to our organisation with human and financial resources, where possible. We would like to take this opportunity to thank members who have already made contributions to support Forum’s research and post-2015 work in 2014. Your support is invaluable.

Chair, International Forum for Volunteering in Development

Announcement

The International Forum for Volunteering in Development, World University Service of Canada, and the Center for International Study and Cooperation will host IVCO, the annual conference on international volunteering, from October 19-22, in Lima, Peru. The IVCO 2014 theme is:

Volunteering in a convergent world: fostering cross-sector collaborations towards sustainable development solutions

Cross-sector collaboration amongst public, private, academic and civil society sectors is increasingly shaping the post-2015 agenda. The conference will explore how volunteering is part of this convergence trend towards development.

The IVCO 2014 sub-themes are:

  • The role of international volunteering in the global partnership for the post 2015 SDGs
  • Cross-sector collaboration and volunteering in Latin America and the Caribbean region
  • Working with youth: cross-sector collaborations addressing youth employment and inclusion issues
  • Working with businesses on sustainable development solutions

Conference features:

  • Up to 120 participants and international speakers representing the diversity of sectors engaged in development
  • Simultaneous interpretation of all the plenaries and most of the breakout sessions in English, Spanish and French
  • Workshops with speakers and partners from different sectors to share cross-sector collaboration tools and best practices
  • A research forum on international volunteering

If you want to be ready for a convergent world, you should attend IVCO 2014. Registration will start May 2014.Visit www.wusc.ca and www.forum-ids.org

Forum and the post-2015 development agenda

In recent months, Forum has been involved in a range of post-2015 development agenda discussions contributing via online forums in preparation of each High Level event. Forum is also drafting a key messaging document on volunteering for development. When complete, the document will be shared with all Forum members for use in their advocacy efforts, along with some suggestions on using these messages effectively at a national level. Members are encouraged to think about what opportunities there are, or can be created in their country to influence their government to support volunteering in the post-2015 agenda. Some members have found it useful to do a mapping exercise of key events and prioritise ones that their organisation should attend and/or where messages can be shared virtually or via other means. If you have such a document available, we ask that you please email the Forum Coordinator: info@forum-ids.org.

Members of the Forum post-2015 Working Group will be in touch with the key messaging document and tips on how to use it – watch this space.

Forum will make a formal submission to the new Sustainable Development Solutions Network’s Draft Report for Public Consultation: Indicators for Sustainable Development Goals.

The draft report can be found here: http://unsdsn.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/140214-SDSN-indicator-report-DRAFT-for-consultation.pdf

Forum members are also encouraged to submit their contributions via the online comment form: http://unsdsn.org/news/2014/02/14/public-consultation-on-indicators-for-sustainable-development/

The consultation process is open until the 14th March, 2014.

Research

UNV has released a series of thematic papers that summarise the contribution of volunteerism to different issues and highlight its cross-cutting role. These papers support UNV’s advocacy efforts to recognise volunteerism in the post-2015 development agenda as a form of civic engagement that provides a key complementary mechanism for social, economic and environmental transformation. Volunteer-involving organisations and other stakeholders can use them as reference materials for advocacy opportunities.
