Welcome to the sixth edition of Forum’s e-newsletter

IVCO 2014 the date is fast approaching

We invite you to join us for IVCO 2014 in Lima, Peru, from October 19th to 22nd, as we explore the theme: Volunteering in a convergent world: fostering cross-sector collaborations towards sustainable development solutions.

“In my role as Director of FK Norway and Forum Board member, I have found the annual IVCO conference a ‘must do’ in my calendar of events. It is the only opportunity to for organisations and thought leaders working in volunteering for development to come together, talk together, question together and ‘stock take’ together for the benefit of  strengthening our own organisations’ work and the collective impact of volunteering for development at the community, national and global levels.”

Nita Kapoor, Chair of Forum and Director of FK Norway.

Forum and the post-2015 development agenda highlights

Forum has made a number of submissions to key post-2015 dialogues since the last e-newsletter; highlights include:

  • Submission with recommended inclusions to the zero draft SDGs.
  • Submission with recommended inclusions to the zero draft UN DPI NGO Outcome Document.
  • To position volunteerism as a concept relevant to the SDGs, UNV hosted a side event on “Volunteer Action Counts for Sustainable Development: How to strengthen accountability of the post-2015 framework through citizen engagement” at the High Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development (30th June-11th July).
  • To position Volunteer Groups as an actor, on the 2nd July, Anjali Sen of VSO International spoke to Member States as lead discussant on behalf of Volunteer Groups during the morning hearing at ECOSOC on the necessity to enhance the notion of means of implementation by including volunteer groups as actors and volunteering as a method to engage people in development to ensure success in meeting SDG goals. On the 3rd July, Adjmal Dulloo, Post-2015 Working Group Volunteer from the International Forum for Volunteering in Development spoke in the name of Volunteer Groups with regards to the modalities of engagement with the HLPF to include broader voices and include volunteering explicitly in the SDG framework.

How you can get involved

In view of the conclusion of the HLPF on the 11th July and in preparation of its ministerial declaration of ECOSOC and HLPF, Volunteer Groups called on Member States to include in this document the same explicit list of stakeholders indicated in the UN General Assembly Resolution A/67/290 (Para n.16), to keep ensuring clear recognition of Volunteer Groups as stakeholders in the new SD framework.

We encourage you to support this call in your country.  You can find more details about the above events and activities at http://bit.ly/1lC4Pqs.

We hope the messages in Forum’s post-2015 key messages document will be useful in your advocacy efforts.
