Essential Core Skills Course
We’ve just released a new online training course called “Essential Core Skills”.  It covers all the basics that every educator in StepsWeb needs to know!
Where to find it
You can find the new course in your educator login, on the right hand side of the screen.  Click on the bar labelled “Essential Core Skills” to see the course.

You may notice that there is a “View All” button there too.  While we only have one course available now, we hope to add more courses to cover the more in-depth aspects of StepsWeb.
Course Layout
The course is made up of 15 chapters, each with a 5-15min video.  Each chapter is dedicated to a specific topic.  Underneath the video are the notes for that chapter and sometimes a small quiz.

Once you’ve completed the chapter, click the “Next” button to mark the chapter as completed.  You can revisit completed chapters at any point, as well as skipping to a specific chapter.
Covid-19 Update
As of today, over 40,000 new students have been registered since the start of the Covid-19 lockdowns.  It is impressive how quickly schools have launched into action to tackle the difficult task of teaching remotely.  To help with that, we are continuing to offer additional student logins to existing StepsWeb customers to enable their entire school roll to use StepsWeb.  The logins will be valid until at least the end of Term 2 to enable schools to do their post-disruption planning and collate records.

The full details of this offer can be found here:

If you would like to take up the offer or have questions about it, then please get in contact!
Remote Teaching Ideas
Teaching core vocabulary and concepts for topics and subjects
You can use the “Assigned Work” function to set specific wordlists for the class to do.  The following chapters in the training course cover how to do that:
  • “Wordlists Section” covers how to view all the wordlists included in StepsWeb that are not part of the core literacy course.
  • “Assigned Work – Individuals” covers how to the “Assigned Work” feature works.
  • “Assigned Work – Classes” covers how to assign and manage work for an entire class in one go.
  • You can also create your own wordlists for the school to use, which is covered in the “Creating Custom Lists” chapter.  These wordlists can then be used for assigned work.
Core literacy structure
By using the Course, you've automatically got continuity for core literacy skills.  Every learner will be working at their own level and speed, regardless of whether they're in class or at home.

The “Introduction to the Course” chapter in the training course covers how it works.

Some parents will have printers at home and can print off StepsWeb worksheets themselves.  If that's not the case, you can print worksheets in school and send them out.  Don't forget there is a huge range, including handwriting sheets, cloze exercises and definitions activities - and StepsWeb will produce these for your own wordlists, too.

You can see how to access printables from the student login in the “Student Login” chapter of the training course.  As an educator, you can also access printables created for assigned work, which is covered in the relevant chapters.

We hope you’re all keeping safe – just let us know if there’s anything else we can do to support you!

Best wishes

StepsWeb Team
