Success stories: Alex Janvier

Passion and dedication

Alex Janvier is a talented artist and graduate of Calgary's Alberta College of Art.

It is pretty amazing that he was chosen from 184 artists from around the world, to contribute 150 square meters of his art to an Edmonton arena building!

The project will consist of thousands of tiny tiles being assembled by a team under the Javier’s’ guidance. Once completed, the project will reside inside the winter garden pedway floor, and will be 13 meters in diameter. His vision will take a year create and six weeks to install, and will be one of four public art commissions in the downtown arena area, worth a total of $1.6 million.

Mayor Don Iveson called Javier’s piece "spectacular," and "a special way to honour our place on Treaty Six territory and celebrate our rich and shared history."

Janvier played hockey until he was 63 years of age and says he is honored to have his artwork chosen for the downtown arena project. Coincidently, while playing hockey he wore the  number 16; the same year that Rogers Place arena is set to open, 2016.
