SUSTAIN DANE TO HONOR 4 LOCAL SUSTAINABILITY CHAMPIONS WHO CREATE INTERSECTIONAL CHANGE
September 21, 2016 | Madison, WI
Each year, Sustain Dane celebrates local leaders who further a shared vision of Big 'S' Sustainability, encompassing a strong community, a just economy, and a healthy planet. These champions earn the title “Badger Bioneer” for their pioneering work that makes the Greater Madison Region more sustainable. Through collaboration, innovation, and courage, this year's Badger Bioneers reach beyond boundaries and across sectors to improve the wellbeing of our neighbors, the strength of our economy, and the health of our environment.
The 2016 Badger Bioneers are:
- Anne Reynolds, who unites Madisonians to create a more cooperative community and just food system through her work at the UW Center for Cooperatives and beyond. The selection committee praises "the breadth, depth, inclusivity and future ripple effect" of Anne's achievements.
- Rev. Dr. Carmen Porco, described as an "unsung hero," whose dual focus on affordable housing and access to education with the Housing Ministries of American Baptists in Wisconsin fights poverty, homelessness, and educational inequities across the state.
- Karen Melendez Coller, who prioritizes equity, economy, and environment in her role at Centro Hispano. She spearheads new initiatives like CNA training, the Caminos Finance Program, and the farmers' market to sustain families, neighbors, and workers in Dane County.
- Raj Shukla, who brings a social justice lens to his position as Chair of the Sustainable Madison Committee, advocating for clean energy, carbon reduction, racial equity, and more. The selection committee commends Raj as "an enthusiastic, tireless advocate for sustainability in all sectors."
