The PortsmouthLOVE Letter

Thursday, October 5, 2017

Dear Portsmouth,

You're a peach. And a pumpkin. And lots of apples. So many things in peak harvest these days, and I'm enjoying lots of refreshing apple cider. Even more than that, though, I'm enjoying that Portsmouth businesses are thinking about those without abundance this season, like this agency did by donating their creative, non-perishable display to Gather.

Oh My COD* — #PortsmouthLOVE Notes

The first ever craft beer brewed with menopausal women in mind, Libeeration, is debuting right here in Portsmouth tonight at The Portsmouth Brewery (and yes, it's meant to be enjoyed by men, too)! Today is officially Energy Efficiency Day in Portsmouth. Loving the big feature of downtown Portsmouth on this Instagram account. There are two City Council Candidate forums coming up —on Wednesday and Friday mornings at Strawbery Banke's visitor's center — meet a bunch of candidates whose names you'll see on the ballot on November 7th!

Locals to read, watch and listen to

Eva Marino's posts on the Seacoast Mom's blog are the BEST reads. I don't have kids, but I legit love reading her posts. In particular, I recommend "Mothering while socially awkward." Give it a read, and see if you relate. Eva also has her own blog, focusing on food, style and "fixes" — her 21-day fitness challenge groups.

#HeyCool is a locally-run Instagram account sharing (you guessed it!) cool videos from around the area. It's run by local videographer extraordinaire Dan Freund (better known around the web as "MyFriendDan"). Lately I've loved their footage of the new Middle Bridge construction. Heycool is also behind neat promo videos for local bizes like Lost Coast

This is My Truth Tell Me Yours is a great podcast from Seacoast local Scott David Chase. He interviews lots of locals who fall into the "artist / creator / inspirer" category, and is soon embarking on a journey across 51 states to do 51 podcasts from the road! I love learning about creative local people I've never met, or learning more about people I thought I knew pretty well already.

Community Engagement

Municipal elections are coming up Tuesday, November 7th. All you need to know is on  the City of Portsmouth Voter Information Page.

City Council Candidate Interview: Rebecca Perkins

Rebecca Perkins is an in-house attorney for a renewable energy company. She's currently on the Portsmouth City Council, and is running for re-election on November 7th. Her current and prior civic and government experience includes:
  • City Councilor (Chair of the Housing Committee, Chair of the Strategic Revitalization Committee for Vaughn-Worth-Bridge, Planning Board, Renewable Energy Committee, Parking Garage Committee, Regional Planning Commission)
  • Commissioner, Portsmouth Housing Authority
  • Board of Directors, Workforce Housing Coalition of the Greater Seacoast
  • Founder and Board Member, 603 Initiative
  • Board President, Natik
  • Peace Corps Volunteer, Senegal, West Africa
  • Member, State Workforce Housing Advisory Council

What are two things that you want Portsmouth voters to know about you?

  1. I am running for re-election to City Council because I'm passionate about my home state. You live here for a reason and I want you to stay here. We need to keep Portsmouth a resilient, diverse and interesting community.
  2. Full-time, I'm a lawyer for a renewable energy company that builds giant wind farms and solar projects out in the Midwest. If I haven't met you yet, I'd love to hear about what you're passionate about in our city. Being on City Council has been such a joy because of all the new people I have gotten to meet! (PS: I also like to run.)
One compelling reason that Portsmouth residents should vote on November 7th? You should vote on November 7th because we have made incredible progress as a Council over the last two years, and we need to keep it going. There are important strategic decisions to be made for our city, and those decisions need to be made in a timely manner with the information available. As a councilor, it is easy for me to see how quickly progress could be stalled, and how some of the projects we have already voted on could be stymied. Please come show your support for building our future Portsmouth, together! Learn more about Rebecca at:

#PortsmouthLOVE Trivia

brought to you by The Music Hall 🎼🎭🍿

Q: What's the name of the island (technically in Kittery) on the other side of the Memorial bridge from Prescott Park — before you reach mainland Maine?

Want to play? Email us your guess.
We'll select a random winner from all responses received by the time we send out next week's issue. The prize is a movie Double Shot from The Music Hall— that's movie admission for two! (Check out upcoming Music Hall movies here.)

Last week's trivia question:
Q:  What did the building that Portsmouth Book & Bar is currently in used to be? A: The Custom House, or federal building. Fun fact — the OLD(er) Custom House & Post Office (1817-1860) is on the corner of Daniel & Penhallow (currently Scallops/Ristorante Massimo). I never knew that 'til now, although it says "Custom House" right there on the building!

Congrats to last week's winner, Linda K.!

#PortsmouthLOVE Pups

Oh gosh. This week's pup is sure to make a splash. It's #mayeoftheday, dog star of @frompinetopalm's Instagram account. Maye is a beautiful Boston Terrier, and clicking her hashtag will bring you to JUST the puppy pics of her! Like this gem:
I absolutely adore that the caption of this photo apologizes for not having posted this one right away — thereby depriving the public's eyes of this visual treat for a few days, during which we had no idea what we were missing! Maye's people take her on boats a lot, so she's a self-proclaimed (actually, possibly human-proclaimed, as we're not 100% sure who's writing the captions of these shots) "dock dog". Following her escapades will treat you to endless delightful snapshots of her life, such as this:
May you race similarly, with wild abandon, into the remainder of your week!
Yours in #PortsmouthLOVE,

— Crystal Paradis (@laughtercrystal)
