Bike Shops are Essential- We Need YOUR Business to Survive

Like many small businesses and non-profit, the Coronavirus shut down is a potential extinction event. We're determined to survive and grow in spite of it all. But this is a scary time for a small program like ours. With our programs on pause, our business sales will be what gets BiCi Co through this time, and will enable us to continue operations on the other side.

To provide some incentive:

  • All bike sales are discounted 30%
  • Non-members receive a 5% discount on parts and service
  • Members receive a 13% discount on all parts and service
Retail Practices in the Era of Coronavirus

Per the governor's declaration, bike shops are essential businesses, and BiCi Co will remain open. We'll remain open for the food delivery workers, those avoiding the bus, and those that want safe/healthy activity. We're obviously taking important precautions, and we think it's important to continue our service to the community.

We've updated our shop practices to keep customers, members and staff safe while everything unfolds. He are the steps BiCi Co is taking to keep the shop disinfected:

  1. Thrice daily disinfection of shop surfaces.
  2. Curbside purchase consultation and alleyway repair services (Please call to make an appointment).
  3. Mandatory staff hand-washing after each bike repair, interaction with customer, or once an hour, minimum.
  4. All bikes will be disinfected before and after we complete any work.
  5. Use of gloves by all employees during bike intake and when working in shop.

To respond to the growing need for transportation and recreation, BiCi Co is:

  1. Increasing shop hours - We'll now be open Tues, Wed, & Fri 12-6pm, and Sat 10-6pm. Closed Thur, Sun, and Mon.
  2. Expanding the Bikes for Job Access Program to include bike repairs. This will operate through referral in the same fashion as the Bikes for Job Access Program (Referral LINK HERE), with an 80% discount on repairs up to $100, at which point a fully upcycled bike through the Bikes for Jobs Access makes more sense.
  3. Providing FREE bike Lights and helmets for anyone in the community that needs a set.

Feeling Cooped Up: Bikes are Healthy Social Distancing

Granted, we're biased, we think bikes are the best tool for maintaining health and sanity in the midst of social distancing. Bikes grant freedom and the opportunity to get away from it all or to enjoy time with friends/family. Plus, with more folks staying home from work, the roads are a cyclists playground!

It bears repeating, remain diligent, and be safe. This is not a vacation:

  • Wash your hands regularly for 20 seconds, with soap and water or alcohol-based hand rub
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a disposable tissue or flexed elbow when you cough or sneeze
  • Avoid close contact (6 foot distance) with people
  • Stay home and self-isolate from others in the household if you feel unwell

Bases covered...Get out there and ride! You'll feel great. There are great ways to continue loving life even in tough times.

It's not even just us with that opinion:

Program Updates
Community/Group Programs Suspended

At least until the end of March, we are suspending all DIY Volunteer/Member/Community hours and youth programs.. This also means our Friday Night BikeLIFE Build Night's.

It is our hope that, within a few weeks, there will be a better understanding of the Coronavirus situation, infection vectors, and a more comprehensive testing regime that provides clear indicators of community infection prevalence.

In the meantime, we hope you'll still consider being a part of the community. Here's how:

  • You can still become a member: Check out member benefits.
  • Come check-out a bike and materials for home repairs: We've still got many bikes that need prep for our youth programs and Bikes for Job Access. If you've got tools at home, and are looking for some activity, come grab a bike from our stack.
  • Join us for a Virtual Build Night - Starting Friday (March 27th) from 6-7pm, join BiCi Co for our first virtual Build Night. We'll set up a camera and screen to stream via Facebook and Zoom. Continue to connect with the volunteer team, get support from a BiCi Co mechanic, and help keep the work moving forward on community bikes.

Bike for Job Access

[Hartford Courant Link]

Bici Co's Bikes for Job Access Program was recently featured in the Hartford Courant. BJA is one of the most impactful and vital programs we host at BiCi Co! Sustainable, reliable, and efficient transportation makes a huge difference for employment opportunities. A bike expands the job search radius from 2mi by foot to over 10mi. Combining a bike and the bus, expands that reach even further!

We only have funding for 50 bikes each year. Our goal is to increase this program to 150 bikes/year.

Help us bump it up to the next level!!!

A donation of:

  • $200 covers the cost to get one complete Bikes for Job Access package (Bike, Light, Lock, and Helmet) out the door.
  • $100 covers the cost of fully refurbishing a donated bike to be program ready.
  • $50 covers the cost of the lights, lock and helmet we provide with each bike to keep the rider safe and in possession of their transportation.
  • Committed volunteer time helps us get more bikes ready and under people faster.

Be a part of supporting the economic vitality of people striving to make a positive change. Be a part of moving the region forward. Be a part of BiCi Co. Community Bike Shop!
