The school year will soon end!
Thank you everyone for participating with all the events surrounding Celebrate Cycling in June and TREA and CAN-Bike’s contributions which have included courses, presentations and displays. It has been an ambitious but collaborative process for cycling enthusiasts over the last couple of weeks!
TREA was also pleased to attend during the 1st two weeks of June Environment Day celebrations, as well as the official opening of London’s new protected bike lane on King Street.
Plus there was lots of local involvement with the ParticipACTION Community Better Challenge, May 31st – June 16th, 2019, an event to track personal physical activity minutes during the challenge.

Look for TREA at Boyle Community Centre and the International Walk this month to oversee composting and waste reduction. Over the past year TREA has had contact with Sunfest and we are pleased they are taking on composting again this year. TREA staff will oversee numerous aspects of waste collection along with the City so that more material may be diverted from landfill at Sunfest. Stop by between July 4-7 and say hello.  Reimagine Co volunteers are staffing several Ecostations this year, a very big job. Visit https://www.sunfest.on.ca/ for another amazing Sunfest program.

This week is world Meat Free Week (June 17-23). Already, the livestock industry contributes as much to climate change as all cars, trains, planes and ships combined. Scientists say by 2050 we need to produce and consume 50% less meat and dairy to escape severe climate breakdown and wildlife extinction. Visit their sustainability calculator on meat free meal impacts here.

Sign Greenpeace’s pledge to eat less meat here.

National Pollinator Week (June 17-23) is a time to celebrate pollinators and spread the word about what you can do to protect them. The 2019 poster below by Carol Schwartz has over 40 pollinators showing on it. Disturbances such as habitat loss, climate change, and application of agricultural pesticides contribute greatly to diminishing populations and disrupting ecological interactions.
Taking policy action

Less than 10% of plastic used in Canada gets recycled. Without a change in course, Canadians will throw away an estimated $11 billion worth of plastic materials each year by 2030. That is why the federal government is taking action to
  • ban harmful single-use plastics as early as 2021 (such as plastic bags, straws, cutlery, plates, and stir sticks) where supported by scientific evidence and warranted, and take other steps to reduce pollution from plastic products and packaging and
  • work with provinces and territories to introduce standards and targets for companies that manufacture plastic products or sell items with plastic packaging so they become responsible for their plastic waste. This also supports the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment’s development of an action plan to implement the Canada-wide Strategy on Zero Plastic Waste.
Do your part to promote zero plastic in your daily practices and share your personal message with decision-makers to make London a zero waste champion.
Sincerely
TREA Board
