New Director

We are pleased to announce our new drug prevention program director for Forjando Alas, Susana García Blanco!

We are very lucky to have Susana, from the Five Senses Rural Club in Bahia. A biologist by trade, Susana is an artist with a passion for environmental education and helping at-risk youth. She is an international instructor for the Instituto de Biodiversidad Tropical in Costa Rica and comes to us with years of successful programs with children of Bahia.

Great News!

Forjando Alas is one of 5 organizations in Costa Rica to receive the 2013 Central America Regional Security Initiative grant from the U.S. Embassy!

With the money from the U.S. government we will be able to sustain our program for the next 18 months, and implement new drug prevention programs including the Mendez Foundation Too Good for Drugs curriculum,
alternative activities through conservation education, and mentoring! Next month we aim to start a club for the girls of Uvita to boost self-esteem, encourage education, healthy options and creativity. They will participate in activities like yoga, surfing and meetings with mentors to discuss issues only girls understand.

Teen Service Trip

A group of high school girls from Jacksonville, Florida visited Forjando Alas last July to do some service work, and had an experience of a lifetime! Click here to hear their testimonials.
They took the kids surfing, taught English, and built a garden! They also learned to use GPS units for a trash mapping project which Stanton students will introduce in Jacksonville, led by Gloria Li.

Book your School

Kids' FUN is working to create a network of schools through the new Ocean Technology Curriculum which incorporates film, ocean conservation, Skype and of course, global friendships. Students in the U.S. can connect through shared lessons with the kids in Costa Rica, and even take a trip to Uvita! For more details on how your school can get involved, go here and click "COAST FUN Club Presentation". If you know of a school that might want to connect, please email us at

Looking Toward Sustainability

A big thank you to all our supporters who donated to make the garden possible! The kids are already enjoying basil, big green peppers, and tomatoes. We hope to expand our capacity to grow more vegetables in the future.
Over the next couple months we are developing an online crowd-funding campaign to buy a piece of land near the school in Uvita and build the community a playground. $30,000 will buy the land, and another $20,000 will build the playground. If we can acquire the land during this grant period, we have a much better chance of receiving support to build a new center.
