Social Media - Messaging Apps
Over the holidays a couple of students were involved in some unsavoury behaviour using the What's App messenger app. What's App is a messenger app for smart phones and tablets that allows users to message one to one, or in a group. Group chats have been shown to be particularly prone to incidents of bullying. Be aware of symptoms your child may be suffering from bullying.
We'd like all parents and carers to become aware of what apps children use and help to ensure they use them safely. We always tell pupils to report anything that makes them unhappy or sad to an adult, and not reply to messages that upset them.
Parents can get some help in reviewing their child's phone app settings using guides from sites such as Internet Matters, Parent Zone or Net Aware, to name but a few. Each has guides to What's App, which you can see here, here and here. Your mobile phone company or internet provider are also excellent resources to ask for help in ensuring your child stays safe on line.
As a reminder, after the GDPR became law last May, What's App, (and many other apps), changed their minimum age to 16. We'd encourage parents to become informed about what apps their children are using, and help us in helping them to use these apps safely.
Year 13 Annual Reviews begin 21st November
Our apologies, that they are taking place much earlier this academic year. (their year 12 Annual Reviews took place in the Summer term). The reason for this is some of our year 13 pupils may leave school early and so we need to ensure their Annual Reviews are completed this academic year before they leave for work placements or go onto college. As usual, you will be notified to arrange a meeting time convenient for you.
Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) Information Session
Thanks to all the parents and carers who attended today. The session involved finding out what benefits their young person will be entitled to when they leave education. Thanks to Patsy for organising this.
