Luke 10:38-42 tells us a story of 2 sisters. Mary and Martha. You're probably familiar with this: Mary sits at Jesus' feet, soaking up his revolutionary teaching. Martha slaves away in the kitchen, soaking dishes, grumpy that she's doing all the work. Jesus tells Martha to take a leaf out of Mary's book and sit, listen and soak.

Culturally, Martha was doing the right thing. A woman was not allowed to learn from a religious teacher and was confined to servitude while the men sat and listened. Culturally, Mary was doing the wrong thing. Not helping, leaving all the work to her sister. Jesus' asking a woman to sit and listen would have been shocking in their culture. He is taking a battering ram to an ugly cultural structure.

Thankfully, our modern Australian culture has come a long way in regard to womens rights, but this story still speaks powerfully to us. If Mary were to pull this stunt today, culture would still shake their heads at her. Not because she's a woman, but because she's sitting. She's quiet. She's learning and growing. Breathing. Soaking.

"I'm so busy." How many times have you heard someone today tell you that? Jobs need to be done but in the business of life Jesus says to take time to sit and soak in the teaching of our God. It's countercultural, it's rebellious, it's refreshing.

I understand how hard it is to do this, but I think Jesus knows what's good for us. Make time, pray for time, pray for wisdom with your time. Read the Bible on your own, with your spouse (see link below), with your kids and sit quietly with Him. The words of Jesus at the end of this passage make it clear why. "Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”

Everything else will pass, but the word of God will endure forever, and so will its effect on your life.
