S.A.F.E. In Action

S.A.F.E. is pleased to announce our enhanced website including In The News and our soon to be released Blog. Check out our new Traveler Resources section featuring ways travelers can visit our beneficiaries and their projects in Africa as well as special conservation-based travel itineraries from our travel partners offering extraordinary experiences and interactions with elephants. Our partners donate a portion of the proceeds from referred itineraries to S.A.F.E. And for our travel partners, please contact us if you are interested in submitting a special itinerary.

A warm welcome to our newest Travel Partners Andrew Harper, Extraordinary Journeys and Capture Africa Tours who have recently joined S.A.F.E. in our united efforts to make a difference. You can find the most updated list of our 25+ travel partners. See how you can join the campaign and unite with us in helping protect Africa’s elephants!

S.A.F.E. is proud to debut our new full page consumer ad - “Imagine A Safari Without Elephants”. The ad will be featured in various travel publications throughout the year. Thank you to creative agency, Eraser Farm fordonating their expertise and time to S.A.F.E. media and print programs.

Mark your calendar for the 3rd annual World Elephant Day this August 12. World Elephant Day is a day for everyone to honor elephants and to spread awareness about the critical threats they are facing.

S.A.F.E. is proud to be an Associate organization of World Elephant Day and will be communicating separately what we, our beneficiaries and our partners are doing for this special day so that you can get involved! In the meantime, share your love and concern for elephants by putting the official World Elephant Day logo or Facebook banner on your social media pages.

Thank you to Chappellet Vineyards in Napa Valley who donated 20% of the proceeds of their wine sales in our “Wine with a Cause” promotion. Over $1,000 will be donated to S.A.F.E from the 2-month promotion.

Partner Power
Outside GO

Each newsletter, we highlight the conservation work of one of our travel partners. One of our most ‘committed to conservation’ travel partners is adventure-travel company Outside GO (formerly Uncharted Outposts). Outside GO, run by Africa travel experts Chip and Sandy Cunningham, has been involved in global conservation efforts for over 35 years, supporting conservation organizations like S.A.F.E. in the ongoing battle to make lasting change through tourism. Outside GO believes (as we do) the ability to protect Africa’s wildlife is rooted in empowering local people and supporting and partnering with extraordinary community-owned lodges and wildlife conservation projects.

Two of Outside GO’s newest and most unique travel itineraries are examples of this. Mission To Change is a 10-day film-making expedition in Kenya, enabling each traveler to be involved in making a documentary to help Kenya’s elephants while exploring the spectacular scenery of Kenya’s wildlife parks.

The Horns of Africa Rhino conservation safari is an exceptional small group safari with a compelling conservation focus, focusing on tracking rhino in the wild in South Africa. Outside GO donates a portion of the proceeds to S.A.F.E. for both itineraries when you mention S.A.F.E.

Beneficiary Spotlight
African Wildlife Foundation

We are proud to be partnering, along with our three other beneficiaries, with African Wildlife Foundation, a leading conservation organization headquartered in Kenya and focused solely on the African continent. AWF’s programs and conservation strategies are designed to protect both the wild lands and wildlife of Africa.

On May 15, S.A.F.E. hosted Nairobi-based AWF Director of Conservation Entreprise, Brian McBrearity, for an evening event at the NY design showroom, Interieurs. Brian introduced AWF’s 11 eco-tourism lodges in Africa, developed in partnership with local communities and private sector partners, and its linkage with AWF’s wildlife conservation mission. It was an engaging presentation and a wonderful opportunity for travelers, travel organizations and conservationists to connect.

S.A.F.E. proudly supports AWF through grants to one of AWF’s 10 priority elephant landscapes for anti-poaching efforts across Africa: the Regional Parc W, an area cross-bordering Burkina Faso, Benin and Niger. This area is an important biodiversity hot spot and home to an estimated 4,500 elephants out of a total of 7,000 elephants remaining in all of West Africa.

A recent AWF survey in April 2014 shows an improved picture of movement corridors for elephant across these lands, and identification of key points for human-elephant conflict on the protected area periphery. The S.A.F.E. grant, possible through your donations, will continue to help support the regular patrolling activities of rangers in regional Parc W for the purposes of safeguarding elephants.

Get Involved

Whether you are a travel agent, tour operator or independent traveler, there are many different ways that you can make an impact to protect Africa’s elephants. Here are just a few ways:

Make a donation (no amount is too small!) to S.A.F.E. or one of our beneficiaries directly – All of our costs are fully underwritten so that 100% of your donation goes directly to our beneficiaries and their designated conservation projects so you can be sure your donations are being put directly to work.

Lend your voice by signing and sharing consumer petitions with our partners 96 Elephants and I-Worry to keep pressure on governments and states to end the ivory trade.

Get Involved

Travel to Africa and take a safari with responsible tour operators and lodges who give back to their local communities. Just by traveling to view Africa’s wildlife, you are helping protect wildlife.
