Meet a WE Biker: Lilach Shafir

Every volunteer brings something special to our organization. And WE count on them—whether they’re leading our rides, writing our newsletters, responding to mail, or building our website. This month's volunteer is Lilach Shafir. Get to know Lilach here!

What was your first WE Bike NYC ride?
The ride to Mermaid Parade in June, 2016

What's your favorite route?
I really love (and miss) my morning commute from home to office (on hold during COVID)—it’s a solid 10 miles each way from east of Prospect Park, across Brooklyn, over the Manhattan bridge and up to Midtown Manhattan. I’ve been an all-seasons bike commuter for several years and it has been great to see improvements in bike infrastructure along this route I know well.

What do you ride?

For my daily bike commute, I have a reliable hybrid that takes the beating of the city streets. I also have a Specialized road bike that I use for laps in Prospect Park and once-in-awhile longer rides over the George Washington Bridge and out of the city. My husband has a Surly that fits our toddler on her Thule seat—and I use that when I’m taking her around. And I Citi Bike for quick trips when I don’t want to lock up. Bikes mean more mobility options around our city, and that’s a win!

Why do you love WE Bike NYC?

The WE Bike community is so strong, welcoming, and supportive! All seasons NYC bike commuting felt so solitary and I was looking for thoughtful women who also love being on two wheels and supporting one another with bike-related endeavors (and beyond). WE Bike is just that community. It is a no judgment zone—all levels of experience welcome and encouraged. And now that I have a toddler, I appreciate the sub group Moms on Wheels and all the support that parents lend one another in considering how to move about the city on two wheels with extra (child) cargo. Nearly a decade ago, I started riding an off-the-shelf Huffy—I didn’t even know how to put air in my own tires. I’ve sharpened my own repair skills and boosted my riding confidence. I love learning from others in this community and also sharing back.
