April News from WE Bike NYC

WE Bike NYC is excited to announce that WE are resuming group bike rides. WE will be taking steps to make our rides as safe as possible:
  • Limited group size

  • Riders must wear masks at all times (if you need to eat or drink please move away from the group)

  • Riders must stay 6 feet apart when on and off bikes

Policies will change in the coming months as the pandemic situation evolves. As WE plan rides, we’ll share all of the event details on Instagram, Facebook and in our monthly newsletter.

WE Bike NYC joined the Transportation Alternatives Open Streets Coalition calling on the Mayor to ensure that the Open Streets are improved and expanded equitably throughout all five boroughs. Read more here

Meet a WE Biker: Vivian Y. Ohtake-Urizar

Every volunteer brings something special to our organization. And WE count on them—whether they’re leading our rides, writing our newsletters, responding to mail, building our website. This month's volunteer is Vivian Y. Ohtake-Urizar. Get to know Vivian here!

What was your first WE Bike NYC ride?
My first WE Bike NYC ride was a hot chocolate ride about 7 years ago, where we met up at the Staten Island ferry terminal and biked up to City Bakery in Chelsea.  I had just started biking in the city and I remember thinking that I had a lot to learn from these cool folks!

What’s your favorite route?
Hard to pick just one favorite route!  I love riding from uptown Manhattan down the Hudson Greenway.  This used to be my daily commute pre-pandemic.  The sunsets over the water there are beautiful.  I also love riding over to Brooklyn and down to Riis Beach/Far Rockaway.

What do you ride?
I ride a grey Raleigh road bike that I've had for 7 years.  Her name is Greyce-Ly (pronounced gracely).  She's been a big part of keeping me sane over the past year and instrumental in allowing me to support the NYC community during the pandemic.  She's helped me deliver PPE to frontline medical staff, food and supplies through mutual aid, and more recently, survival packs to unhoused folks.

Why do you love WE Bike NYC?
WE Bike NYC definitely helped me get more comfortable riding in the streets through the opportunities to ride together in groups and workshops on how to fall off a bike more safely and bike laws.  The online bike community that WE Bike NYC fosters has been amazing with supportive folks sharing information, like what to wear in the winter to stay warm while biking, as well as moral and practical support when dealing with frustrating and/or scary situations while biking on the streets.  I feel very lucky to be a part of this community!

Bike Tip of the Month

Each month we'll be sharing a video of a helpful bike tip. This month is Fixing Compressed Disc Brake Piston with a Butter Knife. Have a favorite bike tip video worth sharing? Email us.
We've all been told - DON'T SQUEEZE THE BRAKE LEVER WHEN THE WHEEL IS OFF! But accidents happen. The good news is that it's easy to fix! Watch this vid and see!

WE Can't Do It Without You!

WE Bike NYC is an official 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. WE are entirely volunteer-run, but it takes money for us to maintain our current standards of operation.
If you are looking for a way to support fun, free, noncompetitive bicycle events and programming specifically for women, please consider donating to WE Bike NYC!
