July News and Events from
WE Bike NYC!

WE're opening up this newsletter on a solemn note to remember the three members of the NYC cycling community who lost their lives in car crashes this past week: Robyn Hightman, Ernest Askew, and Victor Ang.

The number of NYC bicycle fatalities in 2019 already surpasses last year's total. If you feel less safe on your bike or less certain about biking on our streets, WE feel you. Join this conversation in the Forum to hear how other people are coping with the loss and learn about ways you can get involved to help make our streets safer.

WE look forward to seeing you at this month's events, where WE'll ride with comfort in numbers and the solidarity of friendship.

Meet a WE Biker: Cindy Chan

Every volunteer brings something special to our organization. And WE count on them—whether they’re leading our rides or writing our newsletters or responding to mail or building our website. Meet Cindy Chan, one of the special people who make WE Bike NYC work!

How did you first learn about WE Bike NYC?
I saw a free event by WE Bike NYC about Citi Bikes on the REI class calendar page. They were also giving away free 30-minute Citi Bike rides. Who doesn't want free things? Ha ha ha!

What do you do as a WE Bike NYC volunteer?
I help where I can when I can, but mostly I help behind the scenes with updating the website.
What draws you to the bike community?
I just learned to bike a few years ago and I love it. For a native New Yorker who only walks, or rides the busses or subways, it's new-found freedom in the open air transportation route.
Why do you love WE Bike NYC?
I love WE Bike NYC because it's a community of women from all different careers who are linked by their love of biking and helping each other rise together in their knowledge and skills in biking.

WE Can't Do It Without You!

WE Bike NYC is now an official 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. WE are still entirely volunteer-run, but it takes money for us to maintain our current standards of operation.
If you are looking for a way to support fun, free, noncompetitive bicycle events and programming specifically for women, please consider donating to WE Bike NYC!
