Meet a WE Biker: Shannon Smith

Every volunteer brings something special to our organization. And WE count on them—whether they’re leading our rides or writing our newsletters or responding to mail or building our website. This month's volunteer is Shannon Smith. Get to know her here!

What was your first WE Bike NYC ride?
The infamous Annie Londonderry Ride! I had just started commuting to work by bike and wanted to find some group rides. I saw this ride listed and knew instantly I wanted to join! I felt welcomed, comfortable, and part of something important. I’ve been involved with WE Bike ever since!

What's your favorite route?
How can I choose? I love to ride around Governor’s Island, I see something new every time I’m there. I also love the Old Putnam trail, it’s stunning in the fall. Also, any route that leads to a beach. Even my daily commute to and from work in Upper Manhattan is fun!  Each route gives me a peek at a different side of our city.
What do you ride?
I have two bikes: Gladys, a Giant Via hybrid. She even has a vanity New York license plate with her name on it! My road bike is a Cannondale CAAD named Kermit von Smith. (Yep, I’m *that* person. I name my bikes!)
Why do you love WE Bike NYC?

I love feeling like I’m part of something bigger than myself-an amazing, engaging community of advocates and athletes.  Everyone is welcome and no two rides are the same. There is literally something for everyone. I’ve met some fantastic people and been challenged, inspired, nourished by the diverse group of riders I’ve met. WE Bike helped me fall in love with the city by seeing it from two wheels--it changed my perspective in the best possible way!

WE Can't Do It Without You!

WE Bike NYC is now an official 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. WE are still entirely volunteer-run, but it takes money for us to maintain our current standards of operation.
If you are looking for a way to support fun, free, noncompetitive bicycle events and programming specifically for women, please consider donating to WE Bike NYC!
