WE Bike NYC!

WE hope you are staying warm while riding through winter. Not riding much? Pick up some tips for pedaling year 'round at our events this month.

WE Bike NYC Upcoming Events

WE Talk: A Bike Commuter for All Seasons
Wednesday, February 12
7-9pm, 45 West 36th Street @ 6th Ave, 11th floor, Manhattan

I want to bike commute in the winter but it’s too cold and dark.
I want to bike commute in the summer but it’s too hot and I’ll get sweaty.
I want to bike commute in the spring & fall but the bike lanes are too crowded.

If these thoughts are preventing you from becoming a year-round cyclist, then this workshop is for you!

WE will discuss best practices and share pro tips to get you biking confidently through all four seasons, whether on your own two wheels or on a Citi Bike. Don’t let winter cold, spring road repair, summer heat, or fall leaves become roadblocks to getting you on the saddle every day. Bike commuting is possible in every season!

Note: This event is all-gender

WE Bike NYC Happy Hour
Thursday, February 20
7-9pm, Coogans, 4015 Broadway (@ 169th St) Manhattan

WE're meeting in Washington Heights at the legendary Coogan's this month where there's a slight chance that WE will sing karaoke with Lin-Manuel Miranda. Despite it being solidly winter, Coogan's will be reminding us of summer with their $6 watermelon martini special. Join us at our monthly all-gender happy hour to hang out, build community and talk bikes!

Meet a WE Biker: Casey Ashenhurst

Every volunteer brings something special to our organization. And WE count on them—whether they’re leading our rides or writing our newsletters or responding to mail or building our website. This month's volunteer is WE Bike NYC Director Casey Ashenhurst. Get to know her here!

What was your first WE Bike NYC ride?
Cranksgiving, November 2012! I'd ridden Cranksgiving in prior years with other friends before, but that year they were all out of town and I was hesitant to go by myself. I'd attended the party that WE Bike NYC had thrown in October 2012 to celebrate their first season, and was excited to go on a ride. I emailed the day before to see if there was room for me to come be on a team - I didn't know yet that WE always make room! I went to the meetup and rode with other women who wanted to go kinda fast (but still be safe) and we had a BLAST. We had fun doing the race, and then met up with the other WE Bikers, and all went to the awards and after-party together. The rest, as they say, is history!

What's your favorite route?
I live in south Brooklyn, and every weekend I can in the summer I love to ride to the beach. The route along the Shore Parkway Greenway with Jamaica Bay next to me, coming or going from the Rockaways is my sanctuary. That is by far my favorite bike path in the city.
What do you ride?
I have a Specialized Langster Steel that I ride fixed (with hand brakes) for commuting or around the city, and a Soma Double Cross (before they retired the cantilever brake model) that Liz Jose and Bike Works built out for me for #WEBiketoDC that I ride for longer distances, or for multi-day touring. Next up for me is probably an entry-level road bike... or a cute mixte 3 speed with a front basket... or a longtail/ cargo bike... it's so hard to choose!
Why do you love WE Bike NYC?

I love WE Bike NYC because we help other FTW folks discover the joys of biking and build community every day. Working with WE Bike NYC has taught me so much, made me some lifelong friends, and helps us create space for ourselves on the streets. I find it incredibly rewarding, and am so grateful for the opportunity to do this work.

WE Can't Do It Without You!

WE Bike NYC is now an official 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. WE are still entirely volunteer-run, but it takes money for us to maintain our current standards of operation.
If you are looking for a way to support fun, free, noncompetitive bicycle events and programming specifically for women, please consider donating to WE Bike NYC!
