Dear friend of Purple Cake Day

The earthquakes in Nepal have shaken us all.
Many of the schools supported by Purple Cake Day in Nepal have either collapsed or have been badly damaged by the recent earthquakes. Some staff and children have been killed. True to their roots, our partner organisation First Steps Himalaya are at the forefront of bringing DIY aid via 4-wheel drives and backroads delivering relief supplies to local communities.

In September, they will also commence an ingenious classroom rebuild plan using earthbag building technology. Please check out the Nepal update below. As well as see how our kids are taking the lead in fundraising for other kids around the world. And don't forget to register your interest for WOW tickets coming soon.

"kids helping kids"

All eyes on First Steps Himalaya
"In the rural village of Sangachok there is one building that is still standing, all thanks to the handiwork of a team half a world away." – TV3 News

FSH had completed an earthbag-built teachers resource centre (left) just a WEEK before the earthquake devastated much of Nepal. This building is still standing. And those around it are in rubble (lower pic). First Steps plan to replicate this earthbag method to rebuild the destroyed schools and classrooms.

Fundraising from this year's Purple Cake Day allocated to Nepal will go towards rebuilding these projects. Our thoughts and support are with them. To chip in, join a building team, or just follow their progress, visit their website. You can donate direct to First Steps Himalaya here.
Kids Take the Lead on Fundraising
We've always said it's not just about cakes, it's about kids helping kids.
Check out these amazing kids and their own ideas...

On top of the world!

They did it! 5 days tramping, 7 peaks climbed. Jessie (12), Zefa (10) & Tide (8) had an epic time scaling the "Purple Top" for Purple Cake Day in their school holidays. Absolute troopers!!

In 2013, they mountainbiked the Otago Rail Trail. In 2014, they sea-kayaked the Abel Tasman National Park. And this year they climbed the magnificently named "Purple Top" in Mount Richmond Forest Park and raised $1000. All for other kids in Haiti, Nepal, Kenya and Vanuatu!

Kids Triathlon a hit

"What fantastic little athletes! It was wonderful to see you all there for a common goal and all those happy smiley faces so proud of themselves and their achievement!"
–
Irene, Triathlon co-ordinator

36 children aged between 3 & 8yrs swam 1 length (30m) of the pool, biked 1.2 km, and ran 1km for the Purple Cake Day Kids Triathlon. They have so far raised over $4,500, and had a fantastic time doing it! Fantastic. Kids helping kids. (Thanks to Graeme Robertson for the photos.)

Keeping the cupcakes coming!
Special mention has to go to Richmond Primary School who made over 500 cupcakes, especially for Vanuatu. Buckle My Shoe in New York who this month held their Purple celebrations. And the Woodland Preschools in Hong Kong who after already donating
to Purple
Cake Day did another massive donation for Nepal. It's humbling to see kids being so kind.

$10,000 becomes $20,000 for Vanuatu!

From your amazing donations and fundraising we were so pleased to send a cheque for $10,000 to the UNICEF Emergency Appeal for Vanuatu. And because of Jo and Gareth Morgan's dollar matching, this $10,000 has become $20,000. Fantastic generosity from you all!

"This is an extraordinary result and I feel very humble receiving it, almost like it is super special because its relationship with children in NZ. Thank you to Purple Cake Day. I will share with the Pacific Unicef office how this money was raised." – Vivien Maidaborn, UNICEF NZ
