Dear Mayor Lockhart,

I recently invited you to join Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a national bipartisan coalition of mayors from across the country representing more than 68 million Americans to reduce gun violence.  I wanted to follow up to ensure that you saw our letter.  A member of my team will be in contact with your staff to inquire about whether you plan to join our fast growing coalition of mayors.  Additional information on the coalition and instructions for joining are contained in the letter below.  If you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to email me at

Dear Mayor Lockhart:
I am writing to invite you to join Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a bipartisan coalition of mayors across the country dedicated to making America’s communities safer by cracking down on illegal guns. Our members are united in their belief that support for the Second Amendment goes hand-in hand with keeping guns out of the hands of criminals and other dangerous people.
Mayors Against Illegal Guns was started by 15 mayors in 2006.  Since then, the coalition has grown to include more than 1,000 Republican, Democratic, and Independent mayors from big cities and small towns around the country.  Our mayors now represent more than 68 million Americans.  The coalition also has more than 1.5 million grassroots supporters, making us the largest gun violence prevention advocacy organization in the country.
We advocate for common-sense public safety policies that will give law enforcement the tools they need to reduce gun violence and save lives.  Our top legislative priority is advocating for comprehensive and enforceable background checks, a life-saving policy supported by nine out of ten Americans.
We appreciate the work that you and your city council did last year to pass resolutions in support of stronger gun laws.  Mayors Against Illegal Guns believes that mayors and local municipalities should have the ability to strengthen their gun laws.  We’d be honored to add your voice to our growing coalition of mayors working to ensure common-sense gun reforms are passed on the local, state, and federal level.

As a member of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, you will have a national voice on this issue and others, and you will have an opportunity to meet and learn from other mayors and policymakers. We also offer technical assistance with local strategies to reduce gun crime. For more information about Mayors Against Illegal Guns, please take a look at this overview.
There are no membership fees or other obligations. To join the coalition, simply sign this Statement of Principles and fax it to (917) 410-6932 or email it to
