A MAN SENT BY GOD

Fr. Peter Berruti had this to say of Don Bosco:

What merits our special consideration is not Don Bosco, the Saint, the Genius, the Educator, but Don Bosco the Founder, the man sent by God. Let me suggest you a title for what later on can become the matter for a fundamental treatise on Salesian asceticism: Don Bosco - a man sent by God.

Don Bosco is not merely the product of a character and the XIX century Piedmontese mentality, welded together by an iron-strong will. Don Bosco was God's intervention for a special mission. He was not simply a legislator, he was an ambassador from God. The rules and regulations given by him must be seen in the context of a unique mission God had entrusted to him. Don Bosco taught, commanded and initiated his work because God's spirit impelled him and sent him out for this mission. And what were his credentials? In his first dream, God revealed to him his mission, not through an angel, but in person, and along with his mother. God outlined to him his mission; it was a command. Little Johnny protested, pleaded inability, in tears and in a confession of his utter helplessness. But it is God who calls and strengthens His prophets. He gave him a teacher who would instruct him and be his guide. Don Bosco, the only seer of the vision, the only one capable of grasping its implications, saw in it a sign, he had to have a faithful group of followers, when the dream repeated itself (in 1867), the Saint received also a detailed and formal command. The sheep signified the grown-ups and the lambs, the young. Then there was this solemn declaration: "And for their sake God has sent Don Bosco."

It is indeed remarkable that Don Bosco was always fully conscious of the supernatural origin of his mission and prompted and motivated by his inner compulsion to fidelity to this call. (Zerbino, Don Pietro Berruti)

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

1. I will appreciate my vocation by drawing inspiration from my Father and founder.

2. He was an ambassador from God. So am I !

3. It is God who calls and strengthens.
