Daily reflections from the life of Don Bosco for the Bicentennial year 2014-2015

At the Annual Conference to St. Francis of Sales 1877, three main topics were discussed. The first was how to perpetuate the fine spirit that existed among the young Salesians and, which with the growth of the congregation, could easily be lost.

The spread of the Salesian work and the multiplicity of enterprises made it more and more difficult for Don Bosco to continue that individual care which had done so much for the young confreres. As a result it was feared that there would be a falling off in the spirit of piety especially among the young clerics.

It is an undeniable fact that under the direction of Don Bosco there had been formed year after year a certain type of cleric which all would like to see continue: reflective, studious, fervent in practices of piety and ready for anything that they knew was in conformity with the wishes of the superiors. Young men who led a life which was a mixture of recollection and activity which today we recognize was but a reflection of the spirituality of Don Bosco himself.

It was to these models that the youngsters looked with respect and admiration and made them rise above ordinary regularity urged on, as it were, by the wonderful example they were giving.

The soul of his formation and the way of life was what used to be called the spirit of piety, namely the frequentation of the sacraments, a love for prayer, zeal for the worship of God and for solid reading.

The members of the Superior Chapter and the rectors then discussed the necessity of nurturing this spirit in all the communities and especially among the young confreres, keeping an eye open so as to discover abuses and promptly put a remedy to them. (MB XIII, 65)

1. A Salesian is reflective, studious, fervent in practices of piety.

2. Good example is a great inspiration.

3. Formation was basically a spirit of piety.
