We'd like you to get to know Joel, the Brewhouse Manager at Due South Brewing.
What got you interested in craft beer?
I came really close to getting into wine instead, but then my wife became pregnant and I knew I wasn't going to be drinking whole bottles of wine on my own. My cousin was always telling me about craft and Belgian beers, and a pick-your-own six pack from Total Wine got me started.
How did you end up working at Due South?
I volunteered to pour beer at the 2012 Jupiter Craft Brewers Festival 4 months before Due South opened, and then began bartending opening day, twice a month in the taproom for some extra cash. Less than a year later, I quit a miserable career in cubicles and came aboard full time to help make beer!
What has been most surprising about working at Due South Brewing Co.?
That it never gets old. No two days are ever the same, and it helps me remember where I came from and always appreciate where I am now.
Explain what you did in Calafornia last month.
I attended the UC Davis Concise Course in Brewing Technology. It covered everything from malting to brewing, packaging to quality control, and sensory evaluation. It truly enhanced my perspective on beer quality and consistency, and my professors (who also wrote the textbooks) were true legends in the industry.
If you were to tell someone what it's like to work at Due South, what would you say?
The saying "Brewing is 99% cleaning and 1% brewing" is 110% true. It's not a glamorous job, but I've yet to find one more rewarding.
What's your favorite "customer feedback" comment?
Occasionally I'll pass through the taproom and someone with a pint in front of them genuinely says "Thank you", as if we're saving lives. We're just making beer, but I guess that's all you need sometimes. It's a hell of a compliment.
Coconut Grove is located right in the Middle of Miami. Compared to the ‘hustle and bustle’ of South Beach, the bohemian vibe of Coconut Grove certainly removes all the stress of City life. Sitting in the Heart of Coconut Grove is LoKal. Known for their tremendous Burgers and Dog friendly atmosphere, LoKal is a Dade County institution and pillar of local beer. This was one of the first places to pour Due South outside of the brewery.
Matt Kuscher; owner and operator of LoKal says: “As the first bar/restaurant in Miami to ever pour Due South, we take a lot of pride in serving beer from one of the best breweries in America!â€
If you ever find yourself looking to unwind in Miami, grab yourself a 50/50 Burger and a Cat 5 at LoKal.
