To Comfort always, to Relieve often, to Save sometimes
Dear Friends and Supporters,

Greetings from frigid Beijing! As we begin preparing for the Chinese New Year holiday, also known as Spring Festival, we are experiencing an exceptionally cold winter here and are so grateful for a warm and cozy place in which to continue offering care and love to the precious children in our home. Although the children are anxious to get outside once more, we are finding ways to allow them to exert some energy indoors. We were recently able to purchase some really neat large indoor toys for the kids to use during the cold winter months.

This month, we were saddened to hear the news of Leeya White’s passing. You may remember we posted a note and photo from her family on our newsletter a few months ago. Although her life was short, Leeya was able to experience the love of an amazing family and for that we are so grateful. Please join us in praying for the White family as they grieve and process their loss.

This month we welcomed new nurse Aubrey from Pennsylvania, USA. Aubrey plans to be with us for the next year and will be helping us here in Beijing and also in our Henan Special Care Units. We also look forward to welcoming new nurses in the coming months and are grateful for the help that they will be to our current medical staff and children.

We also would like to introduce three new long-term volunteers that arrived this month. Annie from South Korea will be with us for 3 months; Jade from the US will be with us for a month; and Sarah, also from the US, will be helping us for 2 months. We are really appreciative of the help and fresh resources that our volunteers bring to our children and staff.

Thanks and Needs

Once again thank you for the tremendous support that you have shown for the Shunyi Home. As we move into the New Year we have decided to make some changes in the Shunyi Home to reduce our monthly costs. In the coming month, we will be changing the ratio of babies to 1 nanny caring for 3 babies. This will mean that the nannies only work 5 days a week instead of 6 and will also cut our running costs by around 15%. As all of our other units in Henan run with a similar ratio we do not believe that this will compromise care in any way.

We had another visit this month from the British Embassy Away Day team. They are making plans to give us a brand new playground, memorial wall and garden, Kindergarten classroom and chicken coup. The Embassy staff will come in May to install, paint and plant the new areas. We are very grateful that they chose us as their focus this year.

Thanks to the Yew Chung International School of Beijing for raising over 6,000 RMB through their holiday bake sale. In addition to the funds raised from their bake sale, one student made comic books to sell to his friends and donated the proceeds to our children.

Our needs this month are as usual to cover the running costs for Beijing. We also have found that we will need to do some major repairs to our heating boiler when the spring comes. We will come back with some prices when we know what costs will be involved.
