STICK Conference 2019

STICK Annual Conference
100 Years of Women in Engineering

6th November 2019
Glasgow Women’s Library
23 Landressy St, Glasgow G40 1BP

2019 marks the centenary of the Women’s Engineering Society (WES). The Society was founded to support women engineers who, although welcomed into the profession during World War One, were often told “not to get comfortable” and came under pressure at the end of the war to leave the workforce to release jobs for men returning from the forces. The Women’s Engineering Society sought to resist this pressure, but also to promote engineering as a rewarding job for women as well as men.
The STICK conference seeks to celebrate 100 years of WES and women in engineering. We have speakers who will celebrate the successes of women in engineering both past and present, explore the challenges around telling these stories and engage in the debate.
Speakers include: Dr Nina Baker, (WES), Ceryl Evans (WES), Prof Graeme Gooday (University of Leeds), Liz Bruton (Science Museum, London), Katherine J Kirk, Katarzyna Kosmala  (University of the West of Scotland), Anne Locker (The Institution of Engineering Technology)

Docomomo Talk:

Roads & Records - Glasgow's Motorways

Evening talk in Edinburgh on 06 June 2019 about the Glasgow Motorway Archive

Glasgow has more miles of urban motorway than any other UK city, and it has many unique engineering and architectural features. To explore this heritage, Stuart Baird, a professionally qualified civil engineer, working within the Scottish highways sector, founded the Glasgow Motorway Archive, an independent, non-profit organisation dedicated to the preservation of records relating to the planning and construction of the city’s motorways and major roads.

In an evening talk on Thursday, 06 June 2019 at 18:00, at the Wee Red Bar, Edinburgh College of Art, Stuart will introduce us to Glasgow's motorway system and the founding and development of the archive. Doors will open at 17:45. The venue has a reasonably priced bar, accepting cards and cash, at which you can purchase drinks before and after the talk. We will close the event at 19:30.

You can book tickets at for the price of £6. Concessions at £ are available for Docomomo members and students and staff of the University of Edinburgh.
