It has been an interesting six months. We have gone from attending meetings in person, to having relatively no contact with people outside your own household. We were very fortunate this year to be able to garden at the Silver Avenue location. We were not sure it was going to happen until late March. It has been a very good summer up at the gardens with most people respecting social distancing.
We, as a society were awarded a Winnipeg Foundation grant which has allowed us to exhibit beautiful flowers in the flower box as well as at the watering stations. We have some more improvements planned once the water has been shut off at the water stations with improved taps. We will also see improvements to hopefully cut down on the amount of mud around the water taps. With the money we were able to replace most of the garden posts which also included painting them all. Special thanks to the garden committee for their time painting the posts. We were also able to plow the gardens in the spring and hope to have them plowed again this fall. We also have rented a storage unit at Dino’s for our garden and show equipment. These are just a few of the things that we were able to do with the grant money that we received.
This fall, we will be playing it by ear for the monthly speakers. We are looking at ways to communicate the information from the speakers. We realize that this is not the ideal situation, however at this time we are not sure if we will have access to Stevenson-Brittania School. Currently the schools are not granting permits to outside groups until at least the end of September. The most recent information regarding the direction of the club can be found on our website stjameshorticulturalsociety.ca and on our facebook page.
Happy garden planning for next year.
