Religious Books . . .
"More decided efforts for religious books. - Canvassing for our publications is an important and most profitable evangelistic work . . . While we have said much in regard to canvassing for the health books - and we still feel that we should circulate these books - yet more decided efforts should be made to carry our important religious books to the people. Our publications can go to places where meetings cannot now be held. In such places the faithful evangelistic canvasser takes the place of the living preacher" - Letter 14, 1902. Colporteur Ministry, chapter 22.

HEAVEN Rejoices After 23 Years!!

I waited 23 years for this day of Rejoicing in Heaven and on earth! Yes, 23 years ago I called on a young family and sold them some Bible story books. As I made my deliveries we became friends and I introduced Ray Moody to her to have Bible studies. Unfortunately, He was then moved on and the next person didn’t quite jell with Victoria, so she said she would just leave it for now.

One day she commented on the person across the road watching me (I was dressed in a navy-blue skirt and jacket with a white shirt – I looked like a police lady!) and they were wanting to go in for their drugs down the side driveway, but were too scared to! I would pop in and visit Victoria from time to time, spend time with the children, and watch an amazing mother doing things with her daughter which the doctor said she would never be able to do.

Sadly, the marriage broke up and so she moved and we lost contact, but then later she came to our shop and did so from time to time. It was my husband, David, who would often attend to her and let me know that she had been in, sometimes I would see her too. We would give her some lesson pamphlets for her children. Then she would move again.

During the last few years Victoria became a Jehovah’s Witnesses follower, and was very much into their publishing. But last year when James, another Literature Evangelist called, she again started up Bible studies with Gordon and then she was back in the shop, a very radiant lady, to tell me she was having Bible studies and was about to get baptised. “Please come to my baptism, and David too”, she asked. So on Sabbath, 2nd of December, 2017, she was baptised. There was great rejoicing in Heaven and on earth. It was God’s timing. I think of the Bible story of Joseph and his life, and I think of Victoria and her life and maybe she needed to go that path so she can help some Jehovah's Witnesses in the future. Only God knows. We just praise His name.

Last year I was awarded the “Local Hero’s Award” from Kiwi Bank, recognising the Literature Evangelism work which I have been doing for over 26 years. This year I witnessed my “customer being baptised” – that reward is priceless! Victoria’s daughter, Grace, is so happy now that she’s going to our church that her big brother has noticed the difference, so there is going to be more to this family story to come! Thank you God for your loving care.

C H A S E D!!

I was canvassing and met a man who may have been from India or Pakistan. I showed him all the books, but he refused them all. I finished off by showing him a small one, “Darkness Before Dawn” but he strongly refused to even give a donation for that book.

I left the house feeling a little disappointed, but continued to knock on a nearby house. As I was waiting quite a while out the front, I noticed the man who earlier refused my books come out quickly while glancing up and down the street. I knew he must be looking for me so I called out and came over to talk. He had $5 in his hand and asked for the “Darkness Before Dawn”, I praised God in my heart as I witnessed the Holy Spirit work a miracle to give him the desire for this wonderful book.

I Left with a Sense that they will Read It!

After the usual prayerful reading and preparation, I claimed as always God's peace in my heart, joy in my countenance and love for the people.

A door opened at a home that was a partial building site. The stocky built workers seemed intimidating at first. They explained their predicament with the abolishment of some of the 457 visas for NBN installers, that they may have to return to South Africa and couldn't carry any books. I offered them a You Turn booklet which they happily accepted and donated generously.

At this point I asked if they enjoyed reading. "Technical books" was the response. Well that was a hard ask. Then almost blurting out, I asked if they were religious people. Well yes, they were and so I knew exactly what to do. Explaining the contents of The Great Controversy, I confidently handed them the book, knowing that with the influence of the Holy Spirit, they could appreciate the writings found on its pages. I extended my sincerest wishes for a positive outcome for their situation. These they warmly welcomed and I left with a sense that they were actually going to read it. I left almost leaping and praising God.
