The Monthly Newsletter

Hi Everyone!
As the winter season starts to wind down, we're hitting the trail(s) and going for a South Bay hike in our first social event of the year! Expect good company and perhaps a curry lunch. :)

Looking for ways to give back? The San Francisco Japantown Foundation is continuing their COVID-19 Recovery fundraiser to benefit the various nonprofits that provide services to the community and keep Japantown going. Check out their GoFundMe page to donate!

Nakayoshi Professional Resources Network

Nakayoshi wants to build a network of people who are willing and able to donate their unique skills for the Japantown community!

Why do we want to do this?

We've found that members of Nakayoshi, as well as those in the wider Japantown community, have an extensive variety of skill sets--whether it's art, graphic design, fundraising, grant writing, copy editing, project management, web development, etc. We'd like to gather together willing volunteers and help direct them to opportunities in the Japantown community that best suit the needs.

How does this work and what is the time commitment?

Nakayoshi will help connect the need and the resources, and provide the introductions accordingly. From there, expectations will be established to identify the scoped work. Volunteers are expected to complete the work as agreed upon.

What can I get out of it?

If you're just starting off in your career, joining the network is a good way to develop your skills that will have a tangible effect in the community. Even if you are well established in your career, volunteers can develop new relationships and understanding of the Japantown community!

I have skills to share!

Community Spotlight

SF Japantown Foundation COVID-19 Recovery Fund

During our last campaign, the San Francisco Japantown Foundation raised $214,700.00 to help Japantown organizations avert a major crisis and continue their vital services. But the tragic pandemic events of 2020 have taken their toll. Japantown has survived and has now transitioned from a state of crisis to one of recovery.

Therefore, we have created the San Francisco Japantown Foundation COVID-19 Recovery Fund to provide financial support to the nonprofits that work tirelessly to provide services to the community, and promote the continuation of Japanese culture and traditions.

The Foundation will match up to $100,000 of funds. Every dollar donated will be used against this 1:1 match. All donors will be listed on our website.

Cherry Blossom Festival - Senior Appreciation Brunch

The Senior Appreciation Brunch committee is looking for a new leadership group of volunteers for 2023 and beyond!

The Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival’s Senior Appreciation Brunch started 30 years ago to thank seniors in the local Japanese American community for their volunteer services. Each year, honorees are nominated by senior centers and receive certificates of commendation from elected officials. Following the brunch, they are recognized at the Peace Plaza Stage for their commitment to the Japanese community.

Please note that this is a long-term commitment to manage an annual fixture of the Cherry Blossom Festival. If you're interested in joining, please contact Teresa at

San Francisco Housing Element

The Housing Element 2022 Update is San Francisco’s housing plan for the next 8 years (2022-2030) and the first one that will center on racial and social equity.

It will include policies and programs that express our collective vision and values for the future of housing in San Francisco. This update will determine what our housing needs are and how we will work to address them, defining priorities for decision making and resource allocation for housing programs, development, and services.

To make sure housing policies and programs are inclusive and represent the values and ideas of our city’s diverse population, we want to hear from as many San Francisco residents and community members as possible.

Check out the link above for more information and send them a message with your input, comment or question here.
